Description:

The Universal Caregiver is an employee who provides certain services to help maintain and strengthen a resident’s independence and dignity in a family life atmosphere, and who safeguards the living environment that may be disrupted by illness, social maladjustment or other situations that may develop. The Direct Care Aid helps the resident to regain abilities that are temporarily impaired or to adjust to permanent disabilities.

Qualifications

1. Communicating with co-workers and different shifts

2. Assists residents with getting up, bathing and taking a shower

3. Assists residents with oral hygiene, nail care, and grooming

4. Cues residents to follow daily schedule of appointments

5. Assists the residents with laundry, does laundry, folds laundry and helps put away

6. Reports medical problems to administer lead aid on shift

7. Assists residents to meals and activities

8. Completes documentation on shift

9. Assists with medication administration and reports any interactions observed to lead aid or administrator

10. Completes shift report in binder after every shift

11. Consult lead aid or administrator on any treatments needed for resident

12. Reports any maintenance issues to administrator so issues may be resolved

13. Assists residents on shopping lists or planning of a shopping trip

14. Completes incident reports

16. Attends all mandatory staff meetings as scheduled and will be paid if on regular time off

17. Attends all team meetings or resident council meetings as requested by administrator

18. Follows other instructions and performs any related job duties that may be required for the position

19. Post mortem care- contact administrator and 911.

20. Keeps work area clean and orderly

21. Assists the physician who comes to the facility in seeing residents

22. Displays proper phone manners at all times

23. Addresses residents in correct manner

24. Greets visitors to the facility when the administrator is not available

25. Meds are given on time; PRN’S ASAP on request

26. Make sure PO meds are swallowed and document any refusals

27. Injections are to be given in the privacy of the resident’s room or in med room

28. If a med is refused one time, notify physician

29. Labels are to be put on bottles, i.e., eye drops, to help avoid errors

30. Direct Care Aid’s are to make sure all doors are secure during and after shifts

31. Direct Care Aid’s are to make sure windows are closed and safe for the change in the season

32. Weigh residents within 48 hours of admission

33. Take the temp on refrigerator daily and record it

34. Read shift reports from days off to update knowledge

35. Use correct terminology, and grammar, when documentation

36. Follow up immediately after returns from a doctor’s appointment without paper work

37. Clean and maintain medical equipment, including wheelchairs, walkers, ect.

38. Report any broken equipment in a timely manner

39. Clean furniture and floor when soiled or something is spilt on them, needs done immediately

40. Direct Care Aids are to assist residents in dressing appropriately according to the season

41. Direct Care Aids are to report any skin related issues or medical need immediately

42. Change and maintain toiletries also notify administrator if more supplies need ordered

43. Report any complaint from residents or families to administrator immediately so it may be addressed

44. To be able to take a blood pressure and a pulse and basic knowledge of both

45. Be trained by proper med tech program in order to administrate medications

46. Assist residents with cleaning and proper storage of dentures, eye glasses, hearing aids, braces, and prostheses

47. Cleaning out the dryer vents daily and between loads of laundry

48. In case of an emergency evacuation, staff will use private vehicles to transport residents. Staff will be compensated for gas mileage, for transportation to shelter.

1. High school diploma or Ged equivalent2. Ability to read, Write and speak English3. Has experience in group or residential settings4. Evidence of good physical and mental health5. Ability to bend, lift, transfer residents and push/pull wheelchairs6. Ability and willingness to work stated times including flexible hours7. Interest in and caring attitude toward the residents8. Must respect and show concern for all residents regardless of age, race, religion, gender, nationally or mental status.9. Must have willingness to accept and learn from supervision10. Warm and outgoing personality11. Must understand and respect the need for confidentiality in regard to the details of any assignment and the situations of the family involved.12.
