Job Description
The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in the MHHS Long Term Care Unit plays a critical role in providing compassionate, resident‑centered care in a skilled nursing environment. Under the direction of licensed nursing staff, the CNA assists residents with activities of daily living while promoting safety, dignity, comfort, and independence. This position supports the physical, emotional, and psychosocial well‑being of residents and contributes to a clean, secure, and supportive care environment that reflects the mission and values of Minnie Hamilton Health System.
- Current, active Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification in the State of West Virginia
- High school diploma or GED
- Knowledge of basic infection prevention, safety practices, and resident rights
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with residents, families, and interdisciplinary care teams
- Physical ability to perform essential functions, including lifting, bending, repositioning residents, and standing or walking for extended periods. Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
- Previous experience in a long‑term care or skilled nursing facility
- CPR certification
- Experience with electronic health record (EHR) documentation
- Additional training in dementia care, restorative nursing, or end‑of‑life care
- Demonstrated compassion, patience, and commitment to elder care
- Assist residents with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, ambulation, and feeding, in accordance with individualized care plans
- Observe, monitor, and document residents’ physical condition, behaviors, intake/output, and vital signs; promptly report changes to licensed nursing staff
- Provide safe mobility support, including transfers, repositioning, and use of assistive devices to prevent injury and pressure injuries
- Maintain resident rooms and common areas in a clean, orderly, and safe condition, following infection control and safety protocols
- Offer emotional support, reassurance, and companionship to residents, fostering dignity, respect, and quality of life
- Collaborate with nurses, therapy staff, and interdisciplinary team members to support resident goals and care planning
- Assist with meals and nutrition support, ensuring dietary guidelines and resident preferences are respected
- Participate in ongoing education, required training, and performance improvement activities
- Uphold MHHS policies, resident rights, confidentiality standards, and regulatory compliance requirements at all times
The Certified Nursing Assistant must demonstrate strong observational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to deliver hands‑on care with empathy and professionalism. Effective verbal and written communication skills are essential for collaborating with the care team and reporting resident status changes. Physical stamina, proper body‑mechanics, and safety awareness are required to safely assist residents with mobility and personal care. Experience with electronic documentation systems enhances accuracy and efficiency, while specialized training in dementia or palliative care supports residents with complex or chronic needs. These skills collectively support a respectful, safe, and high‑quality long‑term care environment.

Expected to work 36 hours one week and 48 hours the next week (Week 1 is 3 - 12 hours days & Week 2 would be 4 - 12 hour days, then repeat)
