Join the City of Vandalia as a full-time Public Works Technician. Under general supervision, the Public Works Technician performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work and operates various equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of City water, sewer, street, and storm drainage facilities and systems.

Position Responsibilities: 55.00% - Performs street maintenance and repair work (e.g., construction of curbs, sidewalks, asphalt, and concrete; construction and repair of catch basins and manholes; painting; patching; etc.). 15.00% - Performs water system maintenance (e.g., cuts, fits, lays, repairs, taps, cleans, and flushes water mains, pipes, valves, and fittings on repair and installation of mains; services fire hydrants and drinking fountains; assists in shutting off broken sections of water mains and effecting repairs; installs, reads, and repairs water meters; etc.); responds to complaints regarding water leaks, pressure loss or no water; evaluates situation; explains findings to supervisor. 10.00% - Assists with performing sewer system maintenance (e.g., installs, cleans, repairs, and taps sewer lines (both storm and sanitary) including use of televised inspection and grouting equipment; maintains and repairs water supply, sewer lift, and other pumps and facilities; etc.). 10.00% - Performs a wide variety of tasks to maintain the city’s streets, grounds, and facilities (e.g., leaf collection, guardrail installation and repair; pickup and disposal of dead animals; collection of bulky trash items; paints traffic control markings; installs traffic signs/signals; performs electrical repairs to street lights, traffic signals, Service Department facilities; hangs holiday decorations, flags, and banners; etc.); assists with the maintenance of the municipal cemetery (e.g., locates grave sites, opens and closes graves, installs monuments; etc.); performs snow removal. 5.00% - -Cleans and checks equipment and tools ensuring proper maintenance; may assist with special events and perform sign/traffic control (e.g., parades, air show, etc.).
-Attends meetings and serves on committees, as directed; attends training and seminars, as directed.
-Maintains required licensure or certification, if any.
-Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable PERRP safety standards that pertain to essential functions.
-Demonstrates regular, predictable and punctual attendance.

5.00% - Performs other duties as assigned. (*indicates developed after employment) Skill in - Computer operation; use of modern office equipment; motor vehicle operation; painting; use of bench and/or hand tools; snowplow operation. Ability to - Carry out instructions in written, oral, or picture form; interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, picture, or schedule form; deal with problems involving several variables within familiar context; understand, interpret, and apply laws, rules, or regulations to specific situations; add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers; calculate fractions, decimals, and percentages; complete routine forms; respond to routine inquiries from public and/or officials; communicate effectively; understand a variety of written and/or verbal communications; maintain records according to established procedures; develop and maintain effective working relationships; travel to and gain access to work site. Physical Requirements:

The employee has exposure to chemical compounds found in an office environment (e.g., toner, correction fluid, etc.); works in the vicinity of floor or wall openings, elevated platforms, and/or runways; ascends and/or descends ladders, stairs, or scaffolds; works in a confined space (e.g., manhole); works in the vicinity of dockboards (bridge plates); works in an area in which the means of egress is or can be obstructed; works on and around powered platforms and/or vehicle mounted platforms (e.g., manlifts, fire trucks, etc.); is exposed to environmental conditions which may result in injury from fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and/or poorly ventilated work areas; is exposed to possible injury from extremely noisy conditions above 85db (e.g., from equipment, from sirens, etc.); is exposed to possible injury from radiation; is exposed to possible injury from hazardous gases, chemicals, flammables, or air contaminants; is exposed to possible injury from hazardous waste; is exposed to possible injury due to unclean or unsanitary conditions; is exposed to possible injury as a result of electrical shock; is exposed to possible injury as a result of working with moving mechanical parts of equipment or machines; is exposed to possible injury from explosions (e.g., chainsaws, hose roller, fire trucks, aerial platform/ladder, hose washer, fire pumps, etc.); is exposed to possible injury as a result of falling from high places; works in or around crowds; has contact with potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons; has exposure to potentially vicious animals; has exposure to life threatening situations (i.e., fire, etc.); has exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy weather conditions; has exposure to hazardous driving conditions; has exposure to shaking objects or surfaces; has exposure to second-hand smoke; this is considered heavy work and the employee must demonstrate the ability to perform the physical demands required of the position in accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor’s physical demands strength ratings.

In cases of emergency, unpredictable situations, and/or department needs, may be required to lift, push, pull, and/or carry objects heavier than D.O.L. strength ratings recommend.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must be at least 18;

Must possess a high school diploma or GED;

Must possess a valid State of Ohio vehicle operator’s license, valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement preferred. Applicants must have a Class A Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement within six months as a condition of employment;

Must obtain satisfactory scores on all phases of the qualification process, including oral interviews, practical assessments, background check, physical exam and drug screen.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Good attitude, strong work ethic, high level of customer service.

Those with any of the following will receive preference:

One to two years recent, successful employment in outdoor work, vehicle and equipment operations and / or the performance of heavy labor for extended periods of time. Construction, excavation, or previous related trade experience;

EPA water and wastewater certifications;

Recent successful public works experience;

Demonstrated knowledge of public works / utility construction and maintenance practices and materials used in street, water and sewer work; and,

Demonstrated skill in operating tools and equipment such as tractors, backhoe, loader, paver, grinder, roller, trencher, bucket truck, skid loader, etc.
