Position Summary

The Steel Lead is responsible for leading, directing, and developing a crew of skilled trades personnel in ship repair and maintenance operations for U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, and commercial vessels, ensuring safe, high-quality, and schedule-driven execution of work. This Steel Lead reports to the Craft Manager and supports up to 15 shipfitters and welders.

Domestic travel may be required.

Essential Functions

o Lead steel trade personnel to meet production schedules, milestones, and technical specifications aligned with project priorities, including, but not limited to, fabrication, fitting, welding, burning, structural repairs, and installation, while enforcing safe work practices

o Inspect, troubleshoot, and oversee steel repair and fabrication work, ensuring crew compliance with company standards, work instructions, JHAs, and incident reporting requirements

o Plan and communicate daily work with the Craft Manager; coordinate manpower, tools, materials, and equipment to support efficient execution and maintain production schedules

o Support execution by coordinating with project management and other trades to resolve conflicts, maintain workflow continuity, and drive continuous improvement in safety, quality, and cost efficiency

o Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

Required Skills

o Must have strong knowledge of ship repair operations, including steel fabrication, structural repairs, fitting, welding, and installation activities, following shipyard regulatory requirements

o Must be able to read and interpret engineering drawings, structural blueprints, and technical specifications, with basic AutoCAD skills to review layouts and support field modifications and as-built updates.

o Must have working knowledge of NAVSEA Standard Items, MIL-STD 1689/248, and applicable regulatory body requirements (ABS, USCG, DNV, BV)

o Must have strong Microsoft Office Suite computer skills

o Must have strong organizational, time management, written and verbal communication skills

o Must have ability to maintain confidentiality and a professional demeanor

o Must adhere to ISO and OSHA policies established by FMSNA and have high values for safety awareness

Education and Experience

o Journeyman, Technical, or Associate’s degree, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience

o 2 Years of structural steel trade experience required, shipyard or ship repair environment, NAVSEA standards, and EVMS software preferred

Physical Demands and Work Environment
While performing job duties, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand or walk; use hands and arms to grasp, handle, manipulate, or feel objects and controls; stoop, bend, kneel, and crouch; and speak or hear. The employee may lift and/or move up to 35lbs regularly and up to 50lbs occasionally. Work is performed both inside and outside in varying environmental conditions, including heat, cold, wet, humid, dry, and arid climates. The employee may also be required to work in confined spaces and at varying heights. Frequent use of PPE is required to minimize noise exposure, moving machinery, weather elements, and other potential hazards, including the risk of injury.
