Evaluates and treats patients using manual techniques, purposeful activities and physical agent modalities. Provides clinical supervision to assistants, aides, and students. Participates in departmental activities to assure smooth operations and facilitate program enhancement.

I. Major Responsibilities:

1. Administers occupational therapy evaluations and develops treatment plan for patients with hand/upper extremity injuries or dysfunction, including infants and children, adolescents, adults, geriatrics, and frail elderly, inpatient and outpatient.

2. Provides individual treatment to remediate, restore and/or compensate for sensorimotor,

neuromuscular, or musculoskeletal dysfunction.

3. Fabricates static and dynamic splints, utilizes physical agent modalities as per licensure and training.

4. Facilitates return to activities of daily living through the provision of adaptive devices, education in compensatory techniques and use of goal directed activities.

5. Educates patient in injury prevention and health promotion techniques.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:

Required:

1. Graduate of an accredited Occupational Therapy program.

2. Current license to practice Occupational Therapy in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

3. NBCOT certification, or eligible and registered for next examination.

Experience/Skills:

Required:

1. Thorough knowledge of the discipline of Hand Therapy.

2. Effective verbal and written communication skills.

3. Excellent customer service skills and ability to work cooperatively with all members of the healthcare team.

4. Proficient with Microsoft Office products.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Work is considered light. Position requires work indoors in a patient care environment.
