Location: Luana Iowa (IA)

Job Title: HTST & UF Operator

Immediate Supervisor Production Supervisor

Pay: $25.37 - $26.97 (+ $2/hr shift differential)

Schedule: 6pm-6am (2-2-3 rotation) work 3-4 days every other week does include working every other weekend

Summary: The HTST & UF Operator is responsible for correctly operating the Pasteurization, Standardization, Separation, & Clarification equipment by following SOP’s to supply milk to the HCV’s at the required standardization level and temperature in a safe, effective manner which meets or exceeds the requirements of Company standards and those of the customer.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Understand and follow; all Prairie Farms Dairy, Inc. – Cheese Division policies, procedures and protocols. Ensure safety, sanitation, GMP’s (Good Manufacturing Practices) and quality policies and manufacturing procedures are followed.
    1. Immediately notify management of all unsafe conditions or situations.
  • Operate all pasteurization, standardization & clarification equipment and follow Cheese Recipes, formulas, SOP’s and SSOP’s to ensure effective Cheese Milk preparation.
    1. Effectively collect and analyze in-process milk/cream samples. Use the results to achieve targets.
    2. Through a series of standardized procedures monitor and control the fat & protein ratio and temperature of milk going into the cheese make vats to achieve required targets.
    3. Complete all required pre-start up sanitary requirements.
    4. Effectively collect micro samples and deliver to the site QA lab.
    5. Separate cream and fill cream silo, assuring proper temperature is maintained.
    6. Operate UF equipment to achieve targets required for maximum cheese yield and quality
    7. Notify dept. management of all deviations that could result in product failure to meet required specs.
  • Ensure mid-day and end of production clean-up of HTST, Separation, UF and associated equipment, thereby maintaining the Cheese milk pasteurization & standardization equipment and environment in an acceptable condition using CIP & COP tools and SSOP methods in a safe and effective manner.
  • Ensure silos and storage vessels are washed and monitor silo filling/rotation.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualification/Requirements:

  • Minimum High School Diploma or a general education degree (GED) required.
  • Previous Pasteurization & Separation experience preferred
  • Knowledge of or the ability to learn the mechanics of fluid systems
  • Demonstrated and documented safe working habits coupled with good attendance is required.
  • The ability to follow instructions both written and verbal
  • Must be able to verbally communicate, understand, and write in the English language.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, percent and understand weights and measures
  • Previous use of high volume, highly automated processing equipment preferred.
  • Must be willing and able to continue education by attending short courses and seminars related to cheese making.
  • Must be able to work night shift and every other weekend.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit, stand, or walk for prolonged periods of time. The employee is required to use hands and fingers to operate, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms on a repetitive basis. The employee must be able to push, pull, and move up to 100 pounds. The employee must be able to physically lift up to 50 pounds. All jobs require visual acuity to review written documentations; ability to hear and understand speech. At times there can be loud noise which may cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. There is exposure to a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, and exposure to heat/cold temperature changes.
