About This Position

The Lab Coordinator is responsible for managing the daily operations and instructional support of the college’s life sciences laboratories. This position ensures that lab activities run smoothly, safely, and effectively to support student learning and faculty instruction. The coordinator prepares and organizes materials, models, specimens, and equipment for multiple course sections, maintaining a high standard of accuracy, cleanliness, and safety within the lab environment.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Organizes laboratory supplies in the laboratories and prep rooms/stock rooms.
  • Responsible for the setup and teardown of laboratories every week.
  • Responsible for maintaining laboratory supplies daily.
  • Maintains/repairs laboratory equipment, as necessary.
  • Arranges for laboratory equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Disposes of laboratory wastes according to safety guidelines.
  • Supervises student laboratory assistants and trains them in safe laboratory practices.
  • Serves as department resource to faculty, staff, and students regarding the laboratory procedures/guidelines.
  • Under the guidance of faculty, prepares requisition requests for purchase orders pertaining to laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains records of purchase orders.
  • Maintains an up-to-date inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains SDS books in the laboratories.
  • Coordinates reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities in cooperation with faculty and disability services office.
  • Attends department meetings and other meetings pertaining to laboratory matters.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

May supervise student assistants.

Work Environment: Work is rarely required outside of normal business hours.

Physical Demands: Sitting, walking, standing, lifting up to 20 pounds; occasionally up to 40 pounds.

Travel Required: Yes – travel to TJC North, TJC Jacksonville, TJC Rusk

If travel is required, the candidate must have and maintain a current, valid Texas driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.


Required Education

Associate’s degree in biology or related field.

Required Experience

One year of related laboratory experience.

Preferred Education

Experience in laboratory coordination or teaching assistance.

Bachelor’s degree in biology or related field.

Knowledge of OSHA and institutional laboratory safety standards.

Additional Job-Specific Requirements

Knowledge of and experience with standard laboratory equipment.

Knowledge of current laboratory methods and of basic first-aid procedures.
