Histo Technician- Pathology
Qualifications:
High school graduate. Two years training in histochemistry and histologic technique. Certification as a Histotechnician by ASCP or other nationally recognized certification agency (acceptability of the certifying agency to be determined by the Administrative Director). Certification must be maintained during employment with Archbold Memorial Hospital. Continuing education and competency assessment mandatory during employment at AMH.
Responsibilities:
The employee utilizes appropriate histology and cytology specimen processing technique. Demonstrates knowledge of fixative and reagent use, specimen grossing, processing, and embedding procedure. Completes tasks within an appropriate timeframe, maintains workflow, and demonstrates self-organization. Demonstrates ability to work with minimal supervision and make technical judgments as needed. Demonstrates ability to assume supervisory or teaching role as required.
The employee utilizes appropriate microtomy technique. Demonstrates knowledge of microtomy skills and standard laboratory operating procedure for specimen sectioning. Completes task within an appropriate timeframe, maintains workflow, and demonstrates self-organization. Demonstrates ability to work with minimal supervision and make technical judgments as needed. Demonstrates ability to assume supervisory or teaching role as required.
The employee utilizes appropriate histology and cytology staining technique. Demonstrates knowledge of routine, special, and immunohistochemical staining technique. Completes task within an appropriate timeframe, maintains workflow, and demonstrates self-organization. Demonstrates ability to work with minimal supervision and make technical judgments as needed. Demonstrates the initiative to assist with teaching and with research and development of new stains or staining techniques.
The employee correctly utilizes histology and cytology procedural technique for equipment use and test procedures. Completes assigned task within an appropriate timeframe and maintains workflow. Demonstrates self-organization. Demonstrates ability to work with minimal supervision and make technical judgments as needed. Demonstrates ability to assume supervisory or teaching role as required/needed.
The employee correctly performs instrument maintenance and/or quality control procedures and troubleshooting procedures. Completes assigned tasks within an appropriate timeframe and maintains workflow. Demonstrates self-organization. Demonstrates ability to work with minimal supervision and make technical judgments as needed. Demonstrates ability to assume supervisory or teaching role as required/needed.
The quality of the work produced by the employee is of the highest quality and accuracy exhibited by. Utilizes appropriate action with abnormal and/or inadequate test results (including slide recuts, stain evaluation, and test repeats). Performs STAT testing within established timeframes with at least 90% success rate. Demonstrates the ability to work with minimal or no supervision with a high degree of self-initiative and self-organization. Demonstrates the ability to make independent technical decisions and the ability to be a technical resource for nurses, physicians, and students.
The employee demonstrates responsibility and accountability for the work performed. Responsibility is accepted when requested; however, occasionally requires follow up on work. Responsibility is accepted and commitments are normally delivered with minimal follow up. Responsibility is willingly accepted and employee always delivers on commitments and occasionally seeks additional responsibilities. The employee demonstrates leadership skills within the department and this is exhibited by: - Assistance with preparation of continuing educational materials for students and staff. - Participation in a teaching role with students and new employees. - Taking ownership of problems that may arise, demonstrating initiative and responsibility with the solving of problems (if possible) and notification of appropriate supervisory personnel of action(s) taken. - Assumption of the duties of the supervisor during the supervisor's absence.
The employee demonstrates problem-solving abilities as part of the expected work performance. The employee recognizes problems and routinely seeks help to solve problems. The employee recognizes and solves routine problems with no help. The employee takes action on routine problems immediately, and is able to solve and take action on some non-routine problems. The employee consistently reaches sound and logical conclusions on problems, and goes beyond the familiar alternatives. Takes ownership of problems that may arise, demonstrating initiative and responsibility with the solving of problems (if possible) and notification of appropriate supervisory personnel of action(s) taken.
The employee demonstrates appropriate clerical duties. Maintains proper inventory control and performs all required filing. Demonstrates the ability to collect and process all referral specimens. Demonstrates ability to work with minimal supervision and make technical judgments as needed. Demonstrates ability to assume supervisory or teaching role as required/needed.
