About This Position

Job Title: Safety Specialist

Home Department: Risk Management

Reports To: Risk Management Director

Direct Reports: None

FLSA Classification: Non-exempt

Position Summary

This position is responsible for overall organizational safety. Develops and administers the employee safety and environmental health program and ensures facilities and equipment are in compliance with OSHA, accreditation and other federal, state and local laws and regulations. Provides safety education and training to staff as needed.

General Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Serves as facility Safety Officer and serves on Safety Committee.
  • Develops, implements and administers safety and environmental health programs.
  • Coordinate’s the organization's emergency preparedness plans.
  • Assists with injury prevention and workers' compensation issues; conducts accident investigations and makes recommendations as needed.
  • Ensures routine inspections, maintenance and repairs are performed on any equipment or systems and maintains logs appropriately; monitors updates on equipment recalls and takes appropriate actions as required.
  • Conducts safety inspections of facilities and equipment testing to ensure compliance with safety and environmental health regulations; develops and monitors interim life safety plans as needed.
  • Provides safety training; develops, implements and critiques safety drills; monitors facility SDS, hazards materials and waste.
  • Assesses the applicability of OSHA requirements and other occupational health and safety rules and regulations; recommends policies and procedures and implements upon approval to ensure compliance.
  • Serves as a resource to Plant Ops Director, other leaders, and staff as necessary.
  • Follows standard precautions and uses equipment safely and appropriately.
  • Completes regularly scheduled work assignments and checks accuracy of own work; assists co-workers when requested.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all department data and activities.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in work schedules.
  • Complies with all established safety procedures to ensure a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Safety or equivalent combination of education and experience required

Experience Requirements

  • Biomedical Equipment minimum 1 year Preferred
  • Safety minimum 2 years Preferred

Computer Skills

  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

Additional Skills

  • Ability to work independently, prioritize and complete tasks in a timely manner
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Strong communication skills including reading, writing and the ability to listen effectively
  • Strong analytical abilities and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of state, federal, accreditation and regulatory agency laws and requirements
