About This Position

Position Summary

The General Maintenance Worker performs a wide range of facility maintenance, repair, and grounds services in support of NOAA facilities. This position requires hands-on skills across multiple trades, including carpentry, drywall, painting, basic electrical, plumbing, HVAC support, landscaping, and general labor. All work must be completed in accordance with NOAA standards for quality, safety, environmental protection, and applicable federal regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Carpentry

  • Perform basic to intermediate carpentry tasks including framing, minor structural repairs, door and window repairs, trim installation, cabinet repairs, shelving, and hardware replacement.
  • Repair or replace damaged wood components such as baseboards, handrails, stairs, and decking.
  • Measure, cut, and install materials using hand and power tools safely and accurately.
  • 2. Drywall Hanging and Repair

  • Install drywall panels on walls and ceilings, including measuring, cutting, fastening, and aligning panels.
  • Repair damaged drywall by patching holes, cracks, and water-damaged areas.
  • Apply joint compound, tape, sanding, and finishing to prepare surfaces for painting.
  • Maintain dust control and follow all safety procedures during drywall work.
  • 3. General Labor

  • Perform physical labor tasks such as lifting, carrying, loading, unloading, and moving materials and equipment.
  • Assist skilled trades personnel as required.
  • Perform site clean-up, debris removal, and preparation of work areas.
  • Maintain safe, clean, and orderly workspaces at all times.
  • 4. Landscaping and Grounds Maintenance

  • Perform grounds maintenance including mowing, edging, trimming, pruning, and weed control.
  • Remove leaves, branches, and debris from landscaped and paved areas.
  • Conduct basic irrigation checks and report issues as observed.
  • 5. Painting (Interior and Exterior)

  • Prepare surfaces for painting by cleaning, sanding, scraping, and priming.
  • Apply paint, coatings, and finishes using brushes, rollers, or sprayers.
  • Perform touch-ups on walls, ceilings, doors, railings, and exterior surfaces as needed.
  • 6. Electrical (Basic / Non-Licensed Tasks)

  • Replace light fixtures, bulbs, ballasts, switches, outlets, and cover plates as authorized.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting of electrical components and report complex issues to licensed electricians.
  • Follow lockout/tagout procedures and all electrical safety standards.
  • Possession of an electrical license is a plus.
  • 7. HVAC Support and Maintenance

  • Assist with basic HVAC maintenance tasks such as filter replacement, vent cleaning, and thermostat checks.
  • Monitor HVAC equipment and report malfunctions or abnormal conditions.
  • Support scheduled preventive maintenance activities.
  • 8. Mechanical Maintenance

  • Perform minor mechanical repairs and adjustments on doors, gates, hinges, locks, and equipment.
  • Lubricate moving parts and replace worn components as needed.
  • Assist with inspections and basic maintenance of mechanical systems.
  • Report major mechanical issues requiring specialized service.
  • 9. Plumbing (Basic Repairs)

  • Perform minor plumbing repairs including fixing leaks, replacing faucets, valves, traps, and fixtures.
  • Unclog drains and perform basic troubleshooting.
  • Inspect plumbing systems and report major issues to licensed plumbers.
  • 10. Tree Trimming and Debris Removal

  • Perform light tree trimming, branch cutting, and shrub maintenance within approved scope.
  • Remove fallen branches and vegetation that pose safety hazards.
  • Use proper tools and personal protective equipment (PPE) during tree-related tasks.
  • 11. Safety and Compliance

  • Adhere to all OSHA, NOAA, and federal safety regulations.
  • Properly use required PPE at all times.
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, incidents, or near misses.
  • 12. Documentation and Coordination

  • Complete work orders, maintenance logs, and inspection reports accurately and timely.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, facility managers, and inspectors.
  • Coordinate work schedules to minimize disruption to facility operations.
  • Maintain accountability for tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum 1 year of general maintenance or facilities experience.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of carpentry, drywall, painting, landscaping, and basic mechanical systems.
  • Ability to safely operate hand and power tools.
  • Valid driver’s license preferred.
  • Trade licenses or certifications (electrical, HVAC, plumbing, OSHA) are a plus.
  • Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb ladders, and work in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors, including confined spaces when required.
  • Work Environment

    This position involves working in operational facilities, mechanical spaces, and outdoor environments. Exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and varying weather conditions may occur.
