About This Position

The Sociology Instructor is expected to demonstrate and maintain competence in each of the following areas throughout their employment at the college.
Instructional duties will include teaching topics in Sociology, using a variety of delivery modes: traditional classroom, online, hybrid, weekend, 8-week, 5-week, and evening. Additional faculty duties include participation on college committees and performing support duties as assigned by the department head. Class sessions may take place at various locations to include Sandhills Community College Pinehurst Campus, Sandhills Community College Hoke Campus, and Moore high school campuses. Ability to integrate with other disciplines and support technology programs is a plus. Interviews for the position will include a teaching demonstration and a written assessment.
A Sociology Instructor will:
Mastery of Subject Matter
a. Demonstrate a thorough and accurate knowledge of their discipline.
b. Display an ability to interpret and evaluate the theories of their discipline.
c. Connect their subject matter with related fields.
d. Stay current in their subject matter through professional development, involvement in professional organizations, and attending professional meetings, conferences, or workshops.
e. Learn and use technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience when appropriate.
Teaching Performance
a. Teach a course load appropriate to their discipline.
b. Use a variety of delivery modes (traditional classroom, online, hybrid, weekend, 8-week, 5-week, and evening).
c. Teach across multiple locations (SCC Pinehurst Campus, SCC Hoke Campus, Moore High School campuse).
d. Plan and organize instruction in ways that maximize documented student learning.
e. Employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter to students.
f. Modify, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student needs.
g. Employ available instructional technology, i.e. the internet, interactive technology, when appropriate.
h. Encourage the development of communication skills and higher order thinking skills through appropriate assignments.
i. Contribute to the selection and development of instructional materials in accordance with course objectives.
j. Incorporate core competencies into the curriculum.
k. Develop, update, and post course syllabi in a timely manner.
Evaluation of Student Learning
a. Establish meaningful student learning outcomes for courses/programs.
b. Develop and explain methods that fairly measure student progress toward student learning outcomes.
c. Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently and return student work promptly to promote maximum learning.
d. Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit final grade rosters to division administrator each semester according to established deadlines.
e. Demonstrate sensitivity to student needs and circumstances.
Master's degree or higher in Sociology or a Master’s degree and 18 graduate hours in Sociology is required.
Prior community college teaching experience is preferred.
