Position Summary:

The Associate Attorney serves as an Account Representative for assigned clients and matters, with primary responsibility for delivering high-quality legal work product, ensuring timely case progression, and providing exceptional client service. This role requires strong organizational skills, efficient delegation, consistent time tracking, and collaborative leadership of legal support staff.

The Associate Attorney also contributes to firm growth through business development initiatives and professional engagement within the immigration law community.

Requirements:

Core Responsibilities

Legal Work Product & Case Oversight

  • Manage, direct, and oversee the preparation and filing of employment-based immigration matters, including strategy development, client communication, staff supervision, and timely document production.
  • Ensure all matters are prepared and filed in compliance with applicable immigration laws, regulations, and agency procedures.
  • Research U.S. immigration law and prepare legal analyses and client guidance on a broad range of immigration and employment eligibility issues.
  • Initiate new matters and assign tasks strategically to legal support staff to maximize efficiency, accuracy, and client satisfaction.
  • Maintain responsibility for the quality, consistency, and timeliness of all assigned legal work product.

Billing, Productivity & Resource Management

  • Track time daily in accordance with firm billing policies and productivity expectations.
  • Review hourly and flat-fee billing entries for accuracy and completeness and meet internal billing deadlines.
  • Direct legal support staff to ensure effective use of firm resources, including case management systems, research tools, and office technology.
  • Monitor workflow and case benchmarks using the firm’s case management system and established tracking tools.

Client Service, Leadership & Mentoring

  • Provide high-end service for assigned clients, including strategic planning, internal coordination, and proactive issue identification.
  • Work with team members to review case status, priorities, timelines, and client concerns.
  • Ensure prompt and accurate responses to client emails, generally within one business day.
  • Communicate promptly with the Managing Attorney and Case Manager regarding urgent issues, strategy changes, or client concerns.
  • Foster positive, professional working relationships with clients, colleagues, and government agencies.
  • Ensure all client communications and case actions are thoroughly documented in the firm’s case management system.
  • Support training, mentoring, and professional development of legal assistants, paralegals, and junior attorneys, as needed.
  • Monitor and summarize relevant legal developments and share insights with the legal team to support continuous learning.

Professional Development & Industry Engagement

  • Maintain a high level of substantive knowledge in U.S. immigration law and apply that expertise consistently across all matters.
  • Participate in AILA at the local, regional, and national levels, including committees, liaison activities, and advocacy initiatives.
  • Seek opportunities for increasing responsibility and leadership within professional organizations.
  • Provide support to the Managing Partner and firm leadership on AILA-related initiatives, including conference participation, publications, and policy engagement.

Business Development & Thought Leadership

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with existing and prospective clients to identify opportunities for expanded or new services.
  • Participate in business development meetings and firm initiatives in a leadership capacity.
  • Represent the firm at client meetings, industry events, and external engagements.
  • Contribute ideas for new service offerings, process improvements, and innovations.
  • Author or co-author articles, alerts, or thought leadership content for firm publications and external outlets, as appropriate.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction; Wisconsin licensure preferred but not required.
  • Strong legal writing, analytical, and issue-spotting skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple matters, deadlines, and client expectations in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated professionalism and strong client service skills.
  • Experience working collaboratively with legal assistants and paralegals.
  • Proficiency with case management systems and Microsoft Office tools.
  • Commitment to accuracy, organization, and timely communication.
  • Interest in professional development, thought leadership, and participation in the broader immigration law community.
