Job Description
BASIC FUNCTION:
- Performs duties, which assist with the performance of patient care.
- A ward secretary is a non licensed person who performs clerical, receptionist, and related duties on a nursing division/unit under the direction of a registered nurse.
- A monitor tech is; a ward secretary with training in Basic EKG Rhythm Interpretation with responsibilities to observe cardiac monitors and respond appropriately based on rhythm.
- Responsible for checking emails and online learning assignments (Relias) on a regular basis.
- Cross training between roles is expected.
JOB DUTIES:
- Complies with the approved policies, procedures, rules and regulations for the general operation of Alliance Community Hospital and the Nursing Service division.
- Displays knowledge of Alliance Community Hospital Disaster Plan for Emergency Preparedness (in real and simulated situations). Performs appropriately in crisis and emergency situations.
- Takes responsibility of own action, demonstrating accuracy, competency and accountability in performance.
- Participates in committees and educational offerings for self-growth or improved competency and performance.
- Performs clerical and receptionist duties in a timely manner.
- Observes and transcribes physician’s orders exactly as written with validation.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and need for accurate, concise, complete and legible records, kardex and reports.
- Seeks guidance as needed for clarification and performance of duties.
- Recognizes and responds to priorities in patient care process.
- Complete assignments without interference of quality of work.
- Assists in orientation of new team members.
- Assists in data collection and compiling statistics as directed.
- Utilizes and orders supplies properly.
- Demonstrates basic competencies for assigned technical skills.
- Responsible for checking emails and on line learning assignments (Relias) on a regular basis.

- Recognize charges in cardiac rhythm and responds appropriately.
- Follows manufacturer recommendations for cleaning and maintaining monitor system.
- Safely operates monitors and associated equipment.
- If in E.R. as PATIENT CARE TECHNICIAN
- Performs duties, which assist with the performance of patient care:
Vital signs, perform EKGs, patient observations, weights, patient transport, may assist with patient splinting/casting, code blue, direct patient care.
- Respond to patient requests and call lights.

AGE APPROPRIATE CARE:
Colleague has been instructed in providing customer service and on interacting with age groups as related to the department's general client population: including use of appropriate interventions, communication and skills to match the age and/or abilities of the patient/family.
MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPEMENT USED:
General office equipment Cardiac monitors if applicable, personal protective equipment and all equipment related to the provision of direct care.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school graduate, or equivalent, with ability to read, write and comprehend medical terminology.
- Age 18 or older.
- BLS certification through American Heart Association required within the first 3 months.
- Successful completion of Ward Secretary orientation.
- Successful completion of Basic EKG Rhythm Interpretation Course for Monitor Technicians.
- Must be computer literate to complete task(s) as required. Such as MediTech (Hospital Support Software), Halogen (performance appraisal system) Relias (education system), ability to retrieve e-mails, complete online enrollment for health insurance/benefits and any other programs as assigned
- CIDE (crisis intervention and de-escalation) training within 3 months.
SKILLS REQUIRED:
Good physical and mental health, able to relate to patients, hospital staff and visitors; able to work efficiently under pressure.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Able to stand/walk for up to 7.5 hours per shift.
- Able to bend to reach items on floor, bedside level; and stretch to reach over a bed.
- Able to lift 50 lbs. intermittently, unassisted.
- Ability to see clearly and hear normal speaking voices.
- Able to communicate verbally in person and by telephone with a clear concise speech.
- Dexterity to write legibly.
- Have a neat and clean appearance.
