Maintenance Engineer (Electrical)

Universal Stainless & Alloy Products, Inc., established in 1994, is headquartered in Bridgeville, PA, with plants in North Jackson, OH, Dunkirk, NY, and Titusville, PA. Universal Stainless produces semi-finished and finished specialty steel long products and plate including stainless steel, tool steel, bearing steel, gear steel, and aircraft quality low alloy steels for use in a variety of industries.

Universal Stainless is seeking an experienced Maintenance Engineer (Electrical) to support engineering, maintenance, operations, capital projects, equipment reliability, and continuous improvement at our Bridgeville, PA facility.

The Maintenance Engineer will report directly to the Maintenance Manager and will work closely with Maintenance, Operations, plant management, contractors, and the Corporate Engineer. This position will be responsible for supporting maintenance, planning and executing assigned projects, supporting equipment reliability, troubleshooting complex industrial equipment, and helping improve plant performance.

This is a hands-on engineering position requiring regular presence throughout an active steel mill and heavy industrial manufacturing environment.

Basic Responsibilities:

  • Support the maintenance team with technical electrical expertise during routine repairs, planned/unplanned outages, and preventative maintenance routines.
  • Plan engineering priorities, schedules, and project activities based on production requirements, equipment failures, and direction from management
  • Develop project plans including scope, schedules, budget estimates, resource requirements, and risk identification.
  • Monitor and control expenditures and project spending.
  • Coordinate projects with contractors, Maintenance, Operations, and Engineering departments
  • Direct and manage onsite contractors involved in engineering and project execution
  • Provide engineering support for new equipment installations, equipment upgrades, and process improvements
  • Provide hands-on troubleshooting of complex integrated electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and industrial equipment.
  • Identify equipment reliability issues and work with the Preventative Maintenance Engineer to develop corrective actions
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on equipment performance, reliability, safety, and operational efficiency
  • Manage and coordinate major plant electrical outages with Maintenance, Operations, and contractors
  • Coordinate equipment rebuilds and repairs performed on-site and off-site
  • Develop and maintain outage schedules
  • Support compliance with company safety policies as well as applicable industrial safety requirements during maintenance outages and major projects for both employees and 3rd party contractors
  • Apply Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) principles
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Safety-Sensitive Position

THIS IS A SAFETY-SENSITIVE POSITION. PROPER USE OF ALL REQUIRED PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) IS MANDATORY.

Employees must follow all company safety procedures and PPE requirements for their assigned work area.

Employees must be willing and able to comply with all required PPE, safety procedures, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) requirements, and work practices.

Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in an active steel mill and heavy industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Employees may work around heavy manufacturing equipment, machinery, maintenance activities, industrial traffic, noise, heat, dust, and other typical steel mill conditions.
  • Work may involve active maintenance and construction areas.
  • Ability to safely work throughout an industrial manufacturing environment is required.
  • Proper PPE and adherence to all applicable safety procedures are required.

Experience:

  • 3–5 years of relevant electrical engineering experience required.
  • Steel mill or heavy industrial manufacturing experience required.
  • Experience with project management is preferred
  • Experience with low and medium voltage electrical gear is required
  • Experience with industrial equipment, automation, and maintenance preferred.
  • Experience with equipment reliability and troubleshooting preferred.
  • Experience managing contractors and coordinating engineering projects preferred.
  • Experience with plant outages and equipment rebuilds preferred.
  • Experience with Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) preferred.

Education/Training:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering is required.
  • Engineering experience in a steel mill or comparable heavy industrial manufacturing environment is required.
  • Training and experience related to industrial electrical systems, equipment reliability, automation, capital projects, and maintenance engineering is preferred.

Schedule:

  • Full-time salaried position.
  • Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–4:00 PM.
  • Start and end times may vary based on business, maintenance, outage, and operational needs.
  • Some weekends may be required.
  • Extended hours may be required based on operational and maintenance needs.
  • Regular on-site plant presence is required.
  • Flexibility in responding to changing operational and business needs is required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to walk and stand for extended periods.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, sit, climb, and maneuver throughout an industrial facility.
  • Must be able to safely navigate areas containing industrial equipment and active maintenance activities.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to work around noise, heat, dust, and other typical steel mill conditions.
  • Must be able to wear required PPE for assigned work areas.
  • Must be able to safely work throughout an active steel mill and manufacturing environment.
