Job Description

For the 8th time, we are the only Law Enforcement agency in Virginia to be voted as a Best for Vets Employer.GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIESThe Jail Entry Receptionist is responsible for face to face as well as over the phone interactions with members of the public conducting various levels of service within the Newport News Sheriff’s Office. This is a overnight, weekend position from 7pm-7am, Saturday and Sunday. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS -Manage distribution and documentation of equipment to include keys, handcuffs, leg-irons for jail and courts-Manage, document and coordinate inmate visits with attorneys and other Criminal Justice Agency officials-Screen and document all facility visitors, instructors and volunteers-Documentation and distribution of inmate personal property-Answer multiple telephone lines and assist the public and other agency officials with inmate information-Use of agency computers and various Microsoft applications-Manage, monitor and operate two-way radios-Document and route vendor deliveries to appropriate departments-Monitor court duress and fire alarm systems for public safetybuildings and courts-Assist local hospitals and magistrates office with the coordination and transport of Temporary Detention OrdersPerforms other duties as assigned.PERFORMANCE STANDARDEmployees at all levels are expected to effectively work together to meet the needs of the community and the organization through work behaviors demonstrating the Sheriff’s Office Values. Establishes priorities for the completion of work in accordance with sound time-management methodology to meet strict deadlines. EDUCATIONHigh School Diploma or G.E.D CertificateREQUIREMENTS• Must be 21 years of age• Acceptable background check and acceptable credit check• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record• Pre-Employment drug screen and physical, annually thereafter• Refrain from all use of controlled substances and are subject to random controlled substances testing.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS-Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort-Some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling-Some lifting to include overhead lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (10-20 pounds) SENSORY REQUIREMENTS -Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals-Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURESPerformance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as odors, hazardous materials, disease, and pathogenic substances
Requirements:
Must be a citizen of the United States.
Requires an acceptable background check and credit check.
Requires a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Employees in this job are required to refrain from all use of controlled substances and are subject to random controlled substances testing.
The Newport News Sheriff's Office shall safely and securely provide appropriate supervision of all persons entrusted to the care of the Newport News City Jail and Annex; provide for safe and secure operations in the courts; guarantee expedient and accurate service of civil and criminal warrants, and enforce the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
