Job Description

Do you enjoy working outdoors, working with your hands, and solving equipment problems in the field? Are you mechanically inclined with electrical experience and energized by troubleshooting equipment, finding the cause of a problem, and getting it back up and running? Do you enjoy variety and working directly with customers at different locations?

If you're looking for a stable, year-round position where you can use your mechanical and electrical skills while working independently in the field, we encourage you to apply.

We're looking for a Field Service Technician to join our Service Department and provide hands-on installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of fountain, aeration, and related pond and lake equipment at customer locations. This position combines field service, mechanical and electrical troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, equipment installation, customer service, and aquatic treatment activities.

The Field Service Technician plays a key role within our Service Department by traveling to customer locations to install, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair fountain, aeration, and related pond and lake equipment. This position diagnoses equipment problems, performs mechanical and electrical repairs, completes preventative maintenance, and helps ensure systems operate safely, reliably, and efficiently.

This role requires strong mechanical aptitude, electrical troubleshooting ability, and the ability to work independently through equipment problems from diagnosis through repair. The Field Service Technician works primarily outdoors and at customer locations, manages service responsibilities throughout the day, maintains accurate service documentation, and communicates findings, repairs, and recommended solutions directly with customers.

As part of our cross-trained Service team, this position will also support pond and lake management activities, including aquatic treatments, and will obtain applicable state chemical applicator certifications after hire

At The Pond Guy, we operate with a strong family dynamic that extends beyond our team and into every customer relationship. We take pride in treating customers like part of that family and hold ourselves to the highest standards of quality, professionalism, and care in every project we complete.

Here are some examples of the actual work your day would include.

  • Travel to customer locations to complete scheduled service calls, equipment maintenance, installations, troubleshooting, and repairs
  • Install, troubleshoot, diagnose, maintain, and repair fountains, aeration systems, pumps, motors, controls, wiring, and related pond and lake equipment
  • Use mechanical and electrical testing and diagnostic equipment to identify equipment failures, determine appropriate repairs, and verify proper operation after repairs are completed
  • Perform preventative maintenance and identify equipment issues before they result in system failures
  • Prepare for daily service calls by ensuring necessary tools, parts, equipment, and materials are available
  • Communicate clearly with customers regarding equipment issues, pond conditions, maintenance needs, repairs performed, and recommended solutions
  • Electronically complete service documentation, including diagnostic findings, work performed, work orders, parts and inventory used, and customer recommendations
  • Identify recurring equipment failures and communicate trends to Quality and management
  • Crosstrain in pond and lake management activities, including aquatic treatments, while following all applicable regulatory, chemical handling, and safety requirements
  • Assist with fountain and aeration installations, seasonal service, and other Service Department activities as needed
  • Follow all safety procedures when troubleshooting, testing, installing, maintaining, and repairing equipment and when working around water
  • Maintain company vehicles, tools, equipment, inventory, and work areas in a clean, safe, and organized condition
  • Maintain professionalism while representing The Pond Guy at customer locations and working independently in a variety of outdoor field conditions

Job Requirements

To be successful in this role, you need to have a certain amount of knowledge and skills:

  • 3-5 years of technical or mechanical maintenance experience, including hands-on electrical troubleshooting and repair experience
  • Intermediate electrical knowledge and hands-on electrical troubleshooting experience required; experience working with motors, controls, wiring, and high-voltage systems is strongly preferred
  • 2-3 years of customer service experience recommended

  • Experience operating heavy machinery a plus
  • Basic knowledge of pond management, fish health, and wildlife behaviors is a plus
  • Crosstrain on pond management, including obtaining state certification as a chemical applicator
  • High School diploma required, college degree preferred

Because this position performs hands-on equipment maintenance in the shop, outdoors, and at customer locations, the physical requirements apply to both indoor and outdoor service environments. This position also requires the ability to swim, perform repetitive motions for extended periods; demonstrate manual dexterity when working with small components; frequently bend, stoop, and stand for long durations; lift, lower, and carry packages typically weighing 25–50 lbs; and handle packages up to 150 lbs with assistance. In the field, expect adverse weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, etc. for portions of the position that may be completed in these circumstances.

You bring a positive, solution-driven attitude where "can't" and "impossible" simply are not part of your vocabulary. You confidently troubleshoot equipment, navigate complex information, make sound decisions, and deliver exceptional customer service. Beyond completing day-to-day responsibilities, you continually look for ways to improve equipment reliability, identify recurring issues, improve processes, and add measurable value to the organization.
