Job Description

About Rewiring America

Rewiring America is the leading electrification nonprofit, founded to make electrification simple, measurable, and inevitable. We put American households at the center of an affordable, resilient, all-electric future. We partner with policymakers, industry leaders, manufacturers, workers, and communities to strengthen the electric grid, lower energy prices, and build homegrown energy solutions for all.

We are incubating a program at Rewiring America that we call “Conductor.” We are seeking hyperscaler funding to catalyze a new scalable model and market for electrification upgrades. We will offer residential electric upgrades like heat pumps, solar, and batteries at a much lower cost with a far better customer experience, all funded by unlocking the energy value of those upgrades to the grid. We will prove this model and scale it nationally.

About the role

We’re looking for a senior, product-minded full-stack Software Engineer to lead development of a digital experience that facilitates the delivery of subsidized, high quality home upgrades at scale. This requires the management of a workflow, collection of program data, and interfaces for the household, contractor, customer support rep, and program manager. The first launch of the platform will be in service of ~500 heat pump, heat pump water heater, and battery installations in a major metro area by the end of 2026. This project is greenlit by a large utility and will be paid for by a hyperscaler.

This fixed term role is to be one of two primary engineers on the project, owning the build from concept to production to post-launch iteration. You’ll operate with a high degree of autonomy, reporting to the VP of Product & Strategic Growth (also the PM) and partnering closely with design while translating real customer needs into a simple, scalable experience. This 6-month, fixed term position will be a strong fit for someone who thrives in ambiguity, moves quickly, and enjoys building from the ground up in a small, focused team.

What you'll do

  • Own end-to-end development of a customer- and contractor-facing web application (front + backend)
  • Translate fuzzy or ambiguous requirements into clear, technical solutions and product experiences
  • Collaborate with product and design to shape UX, flows, and feature prioritization
  • Build scalable APIs and services to support core application functionality
  • Implement clean, modular, and accessible UI components
  • Establish processes for testing, deployment, and iteration
  • Use AI tools to accelerate development, prototyping, and problem-solving
  • Proactively communicate progress in a clear and concise manner

Who you are

The person who will thrive in this role is looking for high ownership and autonomy. They will be hungry for direct user interaction and feedback to scrappily prototype and build features that drive value and help us build into the vision. This isn’t a “ticket-taking” role. You’ll have the opportunity to do meaningful work that supports electrification and energy transition efforts and shape a 0→1 product that has real impact on households, communities, and the climate.

Core qualifications:

  • 6-8+ years of experience as a full-stack software engineer
  • Experience building and operating production web applications end-to-end
  • Comfort owning scope, making decisions, and working independently with minimal oversight
  • Product mindset - you think beyond code and care about user experience and outcomes
  • Experience with modern frontend frameworks (React) and core web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript)
  • Experience writing and operating production web services using Python/Django, Node/Express, Ruby/Rails, Java/Spring, or equivalent backend frameworks.
  • Strong experience with relational databases and data modeling (SQL or equivalent), as well as building application domain models from scratch
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools or integrating AI into products
  • Experience working on small teams or as a solo/lead engineer on a project
  • Strong collaboration skills in a remote environment

Preferred qualifications:

  • Content knowledge or experience in energy, building electrification, residential real estate, construction, home improvement or other domains with connection to residential buildings.
  • Experience building customer-facing portals, marketplaces, or workflow tools
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and/or infrastructure as code (Terraform)

Rewiring America is proud to offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes:

  • 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance for employees (and their families).
  • 100% employer-paid short term and long term disability insurance and life insurance policies.
  • Employees automatically receive a 6% safe-harbor employer contribution to their 401k retirement plan, regardless of their own contributions.
  • Employees are also eligible for pre-tax transportation benefits.
  • Full Time Employees will receive 160 hours of vacation time, 80 hours of health leave, up to 2 days of casual leave, and 24 hours of volunteer leave annually.
  • Employees will also receive 11 paid holidays throughout the calendar year (13 days during Presidential and Congressional elections).
  • We have an office closure between Christmas and New Year.
  • Regular, full-time employees and part-time employees are eligible to take up to sixteen weeks of parental leave, in all cases related to birth, adoption, or foster care starting from the first day of employment.
  • We offer access to professional development resources including up to $2000 per calendar year to use towards your growth and development.
