Position Summary
The Medical Assistant (CMA/RMA) is responsible for providing high-quality clinical support and patient care in accordance with individualized patient needs, established clinical standards, and North Carolina scope of practice regulations. Working under the direction of the Nurse Manager, Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, or Physician, the Medical Assistant plays an essential role in delivering safe, efficient, and compassionate gastroenterology care while supporting providers throughout the patient experience.
Essential Responsibilities
- Obtain, verify, and document patient health histories.
- Collect laboratory specimens for diagnostic testing.
- Administer medications and treatments as directed by the provider.
- Provide direct patient care while ensuring patient comfort and safety.
- Record and maintain accurate documentation of patient encounters, treatments, medications, procedures, and test results in the electronic medical record.
- Capture and document each patient's colonoscopy history or the absence of previous screening.
- Assist physicians and clinical staff during examinations, diagnostic procedures, and minor medical procedures.
- Implement patient care plans according to provider orders.
- Follow physician-approved protocols, standing orders, clinical algorithms, and decision trees.
- Educate patients by reinforcing physician instructions, providing educational materials, and answering routine questions within scope of practice.
- Maintain compliance with infection prevention, patient confidentiality, and workplace safety standards.
- Promptly communicate patient concerns or clinical issues to the Nurse Manager or appropriate licensed provider.
- Demonstrate cost-conscious use of clinical supplies and resources.
- Learn and maintain proficiency with new equipment, technology, and clinical procedures.
- Attend monthly staff meetings and participate in practice initiatives.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Current Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) credential.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Commitment to providing compassionate, patient-centered care.
- Bilingual skills a plus.
