Job Description
Diagnostic Ultrasound Technologist
$166,000 - $1,766,000 a year
Akicita Federal is hiring a Medical Instrument Technologist (Ultrasound) to deliver high-quality diagnostic imaging services for the Indian Health Service's Navajo Area program at the Kayenta Health Center in Kayenta, AZ. In this role, you will provide essential inpatient and outpatient ultrasound care to members of the Navajo Nation and surrounding tribal communities, directly supporting comprehensive, culturally respectful healthcare. This is meaningful, patient-facing work in one of the most unique and mission-driven healthcare settings in the country.
- Perform a full range of diagnostic ultrasound examinations independently, including Right Upper Quadrant, Renal, Complete Abdomen, Pelvic, Breast, Thyroid, Testicular, and Endovaginal studies
- Conduct obstetrical ultrasounds including basic, limited, Level II, and emergent obstetrical/ectopic examinations
- Execute upper and lower extremity venous Doppler studies and Carotid ultrasounds
- Perform Pediatric Hip Ultrasounds in accordance with established clinical standards
- Operate and maintain the GE LogicE9 ultrasound unit, ensuring proper functionality and image quality for diagnostic interpretation
- Secure patient confidence and cooperation throughout examination procedures, applying cultural awareness and sensitivity appropriate to the American Indian and Alaska Native patient population
- Apply knowledge of anatomy and physiologyincluding muscular, circulatory, digestive, reproductive, and urinary systemsto interpret examination requests and assess diagnostic acceptability of images
- Maintain strict patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and the Privacy Act, and adhere to all applicable infection control policies and procedures
- Demonstrated experience as a Medical Instrument Technologist (Diagnostic Ultrasound/Sonography) with the ability to independently perform the full range of required examinations
- Current registration or eligibility for registration with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or equivalent credentialing body
- Working knowledge of and hands-on experience with the GE LogicE9 ultrasound system
- Proficiency in performing obstetrical ultrasounds (basic, limited, Level II, and emergent), vascular Doppler studies, and musculoskeletal/pediatric studies
- Current CPR certification
- Knowledge of infection control principles and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Ability to adhere to The Joint Commission, CMS, and AAAHC standards of practice
- Compliance with applicable federal codes of conduct, patient privacy laws (HIPAA, Privacy Act of 1974), and IHS facility policies and procedures

- Prior experience working in a federal, tribal, or Indian Health Service healthcare environment
- Familiarity with culturally competent care practices specific to American Indian and Alaska Native communities
- Experience in a critical access or rural/frontier hospital setting where independent clinical judgment is routinely required
- Multiple ARDMS specialty certifications (e.g., OB/GYN, Abdomen, Vascular Technology)
- Experience performing high-complexity or emergent obstetrical ultrasounds in a fast-paced clinical environment
