Job Overview:

A Transport/Special Procedure Nurse (TSPN) possesses the ability to function as a member of the Neonatal Intensive Care s mulitdisciplinary team,

Responsibilities include the stabilization and transport of stable to critically ill neonates to and from referral hospitals, coordination of in house diagnostic testing and treatments and assisting with NICU procedures

“Our Children's Hospital of New Jersey (CHoNJ) serves pediatric patients exclusively. We understand that children have unique needs when it comes to medical care, requiring more than just clinical intervention. Our patients receive treatment in a calming and compassionate atmosphere in nearly 30 pediatric subspecialties including a full-service Children’s Heart Center pediatric cardiac surgery program. Experienced surgical and medical specialists include a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, a Pediatric Emergency Department, and the only Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in New Jersey with an ECMO unit to assist infants in severe respiratory distress. Children's Hospital also offers a Valerie Fund Children's Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders and a specialized pediatric anesthesia and sedation program for children undergoing surgical procedures.”

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Graduate from an accredited NLN Nursing program
  • Strong communication skills
  • Flexibility and adaptability, ability to meet the needs of the unit
  • Proficient computer skills
  • Current Level IV NICU or PICU experience in an acute care setting

Preferred:

  • BSN Degree

Certifications and Licenses Required:

Active NJ RN license or compact RN license with NJ endorsement

BLS from the American Heart Association

NRP Certification within 90 days of hire

Scheduling Requirements:

  • Day Shift, 7a– 7p
  • Full Time 36 hours per week
  • Monday – Friday, every other weekend and holiday rotation

Essential Functions:

  • Acts as the staff liason for ECMO cannulation and decannulation,
  • Administers medication to the neonate according to established protocols
  • Assume responsibility for restocking/ reordering supplies and cleaning warmer bed in the procedure room after each procedure
  • Assumes responsibility for priming the central line IV fluid under the laminar flow hood
  • Assumes responsibility for restocking/ reordering equipment and supplies after each transport
  • Attends quarterly transport team meetings (minimum of 3 per year)
  • Checks equipment (transporter, bag and folder) at the start of each shift and documents on the equipment check list
  • Coordinates the nursing care for neonates transported to Children's Hospital of New Jersey/NBIMC from referral hospitals
  • Demonstrates effectiveness in coordinating aspects of patient care involving other departments
  • Demonstrates proficiency in performing assigned nursing procedures for the comfort and safety of the neonate
  • Documents transport activities accurately on the appropriate forms
  • Implements the policies and procedures of the hospital and Nursing Department
  • Maintains central line dressing integrity and maintains a log for quality
  • Maintains transport equipment in proper working order
  • Manages the care of the neonate while in the procedure room
  • Manages time efficiently in order to maintain a balance between transport, teaching and unit specific clinical responsibilities
  • Performs interventions in accordance with current policy and procedures, safety guidelines and infection control principles
  • Provides a weekly phone report to referral hospital personnel regarding the status of transported patients
  • Provides assistance when needed with central line insertions and provides assistance when needed with central line insertions and repositioning
  • Provides formal communication regarding infant status to parents whose infants have been transported
  • Provides one educational program per year to the NICU nursing staff
  • Provides parents with an explanation of procedures and treatments to be performed
  • Provides safe care while accompanying infants to and from off-unit special procedures
  • Reports any equipment malfunctions to the Nursing Director or Coordinator and biomedical department and follows up when applicable
  • Restocks and reorders ECMO supplies
  • Seeks assistance from Coordinator, Manager, Director or Educator in solving clinical and management problems,
  • Sets up procedure room for procedures
  • Tests equipment (I-STAT, Accu-Check, Transporters)at the scheduled times
  • Tests equipment (I-STAT, Accu-Check, Transporters)at the scheduled times and documents check on the appropriate forms
