RESPIRATORY STUDENT L1

Position Summary

The primary purpose of the Respiratory Therapist student is to perform all duties under medical supervision in the treatment, management, control, diagnostic evaluation and care of patients with deficiencies and abnormalities associated with the cardio-pulmonary system, and work cooperatively with the health care team in maintaining standards of care within the framework of the State Medical Board of Ohio.

Department Summary

The Aultman Respiratory Care Department is a life-supporting, life-enhancing health care profession, licensed by the State of Ohio, and practiced under qualified medical direction. The overall purpose is to provide quality care to patients of all ages; from neonates to the elderly who exhibit disorders of the cardiopulmonary system. Respiratory Care is involved in the diagnostic testing, therapeutics, and monitoring of both inpatients and outpatients per physician’s order.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a CoARC accredited Respiratory Therapy program.
  • Limited Permit Holder (L1).
    • A person issued a limited permit shall practice respiratory care only under the supervision of a respiratory care professional. A permit may be held for a maximum of three years, but not to exceed one year after the date of graduation from a respiratory care educational program. An applicant for a Limited Permit (L1) must provide proof of meeting one of the following requirements:
      • Is enrolled in and is in good standing in a respiratory care educational program that meets the requirements of rule 4761-4-01 of the Administrative Code; or
      • Is a graduate of a respiratory care educational program that meets the requirements of rule 4761-4-01 of the Administrative Code.
  • Obtain and maintain current American Heart Association (AHA) training in Basic Life Support (BLS) utilizing Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) is required.

  • Adheres to Aultman’s policies and procedures.
  • Completes mandatory orientation, training and education.
  • Maintains standards of respiratory care.
  • Maintains professional communication with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Reports and accurately documents pertinent assessment and response to therapy provided to the multidisciplinary team.

Department Responsibilities & Expectations

Working Conditions

  • Work eight to twelve hours a day. This unit requires 24/7 coverage.
  • Shifts are variable to volume/workload of department. Rotation as needed.
  • Work weekends and holidays as assigned. Every other weekend and two holidays a year, in a group rotation.
  • Lunch periods and breaks are coordinated with other staff members to maintain adequate floor coverage.
  • Staff may be assigned to different locations within the foundation.

Hazardous Exposure Category

Category I - Includes tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues. All procedures or other job-related tasks that involve an inherent potential for spills or splashes of, or mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids or tissues are Category I tasks. Use of appropriate protective measures is required for every employee engaged in Category I tasks.
