This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Materials Writer – Engineering FRQ based in India.
This contract opportunity is designed for highly experienced materials engineering professionals who can translate deep technical expertise into challenging, realistic engineering problems. You will create original free-response questions focused on Materials Science and Engineering and develop rigorous solutions grounded in real-world industrial scenarios. Your work will help test the reasoning capabilities of advanced AI models against expert-level engineering challenges. You will assess problem difficulty by benchmarking questions across multiple frontier language models and ensuring they meaningfully challenge current AI systems. The role combines technical writing, engineering judgment, problem design, and AI evaluation. Working remotely and asynchronously, you will collaborate with AI research teams while contributing directly to the training and assessment of next-generation models.
- Author original, technically rigorous free-response engineering problems in Materials Science and Engineering.
- Design challenging questions that reflect realistic industrial scenarios, engineering constraints, and practical materials engineering decisions.
- Develop expert-level solutions, explanations, and reasoning grounded in established engineering principles and real-world professional practice.
- Create problems that appropriately test advanced reasoning, technical judgment, and the application of materials engineering concepts.
- Validate the difficulty and effectiveness of authored problems by testing them against three frontier language models.
- Analyze model responses and ensure that at least one evaluated model is unable to solve the problem correctly, demonstrating an appropriate level of challenge.
- Refine questions and solutions based on model performance to improve their clarity, rigor, and discriminating power.
- Work independently and asynchronously while meeting project deadlines and maintaining consistently high technical standards.
- Collaborate with AI research teams to support model training, benchmarking, and evaluation initiatives.
- PhD in Materials Science & Engineering, Metallurgy, or a materials-focused Mechanical or Chemical Engineering discipline.
- 5+ years of professional experience in areas such as materials selection, failure analysis, materials testing, process development, or related engineering disciplines.
- Strong practical and theoretical expertise in Materials Science and Engineering, with the ability to apply technical knowledge to complex real-world problems.
- Experience working with recognized, well-established, or blue-chip employers is required.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze complex engineering scenarios and develop technically defensible solutions.
- Excellent technical writing and communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate sophisticated engineering concepts.
- Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills, with a focus on accuracy, rigor, and practical engineering judgment.
- Ability to assess the difficulty and quality of technical problems and distinguish between superficial and genuinely expert-level reasoning.
- Comfortable working independently and asynchronously while managing deadlines and delivering high-quality technical content.
- Experience with AI model evaluation, technical question development, benchmarking, or engineering education is a plus.
- Competitive compensation: $85 per hour.
