Job Description

The Retail Pharmacist provides safe, accurate, and patient-centered pharmacy services within the hospital-owned retail pharmacy. Primary responsibilities include prescription verification, dispensing, patient counseling, medication access support, and retail operations. The pharmacist may also provide limited support to hospital pharmacy and clinic workflows as needed to maintain continuity of care. Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Retail Pharmacy Responsibilities (Primary)

  • Reviews and verifies prescriptions for accuracy, appropriateness, allergies, interactions, and compliance with state and hospital policies.
  • Dispenses medications and provides comprehensive patient counseling on prescription and over-the-counter products.
  • Supports daily retail operations including point-of-sale functions, insurance processing, prior authorizations, and medication access coordination.
  • Participates in refill management, adherence initiatives, medication synchronization, and patient engagement programs.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable Indiana Board of Pharmacy regulations and retail pharmacy standards.
  • Maintains accurate patient profiles, documentation, and communication with prescribers to resolve medication-related issues.
  • Provides oversight and direction to pharmacy technicians working in the retail pharmacy.

Cross‑Coverage Responsibilities (Hospital, Outpatient, Clinics)

(Assigned based on department needs and pharmacist competency; secondary to retail duties)

  • Provides general pharmacy support across hospital, outpatient, and clinic settings when needed.
  • Performs medication verification, distribution, communication, and documentation appropriate to the assigned area.
  • Assists with patient education, medication access, and care coordination when supporting non‑retail workflows.
  • Contributes to team-based pharmacy operations across service areas.
  • Identifies and reports medication-related problems, errors, near misses, and adverse events.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities, audits, and updates to policies or procedures.
  • Maintains accurate patient profiles and documentation in pharmacy systems/EHR.
  • Communicates medication-related recommendations and clarifications to prescribers and care teams.
  • Performs or verifies sterile and non-sterile compounding as trained and competency-assessed.
  • Demonstrates clear ownership of workplace and patient safety.
  • Reports mistakes, near misses, adverse events and quality and safety concerns.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of safety and quality improvement activities.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

Job Requirements

Education: Graduate of an ACPE-accredited School/College of Pharmacy (PharmD or BS Pharmacy).

Licensure/Certification: Licensed as a Pharmacist by the State of Indiana (required).

Experience: Retail pharmacy experience strongly preferred. Hospital/health-system experience beneficial but not required. New graduates considered.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong clinical judgment and attention to detail. Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work in a fast-paced retail environment.
  • Ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Working knowledge of pharmacy systems, EHRs, and retail pharmacy software.
  • Supervisory Scope: Provides work direction and oversight for pharmacy technicians and support staff, primarily within the retail pharmacy.

Schedule/Work Conditions:

  • May include variable shifts, weekend/holiday coverage, and on-call responsibilities.
  • Primary work location is the hospital-owned retail pharmacy; may float to inpatient pharmacy, outpatient areas, and clinics as needed.
  • Work may involve entering patient care areas, pharmacy/compounding areas, and clinic environments.
  • Frequent standing and walking; occasional sitting; ability to lift 25 lbs.; frequent reaching, stooping, and bending.
Performs other duties as assigned to support Pharmacy operational and organizational needs.
