Academy of the Holy Names FIRST LEGO League Robotics Coach (5th-8th grade)
Position Summary: The FIRST LEGO League Robotics Coach will lead and mentor a team of 5th–8th grade students as they explore robotics, coding, engineering, and real-world problem-solving through the FIRST LEGO League program. The coach will guide students through the annual FLL challenge, supporting the team as they design, build, and program their LEGO robot while developing and presenting their research project and demonstrating teamwork and collaboration.
Essential Responsibilities
- Lead weekly robotics practices and prepare students for the annual FIRST LEGO League competition.
- Guide students through the FLL challenge, including robot design, building, programming, research/project development, and team presentation.
- Teach and support students in LEGO robotics, coding, engineering principles, and problem-solving.
- Encourage students to take ownership of the design and decision-making process while providing appropriate coaching and guidance.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and collaborative team environment that emphasizes teamwork, creativity, perseverance, and gracious professionalism.
- Help students develop strategies for the FLL robot missions and prepare for competition.
- Monitor team progress and establish practice goals and milestones throughout the season.
- Communicate regularly with families and the school regarding practice schedules, competition details, and team needs.
- Prepare students for and attend FIRST LEGO League tournaments and other required robotics events.
- Ensure appropriate care, organization, and inventory of all robotics equipment and materials.
- Follow all school policies and procedures related to student supervision, safety, communication, and extracurricular activities.
· Receiving or received Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Engineering, Computer Science, or a STEM-related field or relevant and equivalent experience in the FIRST Robotics Program (FRC or FTC)
· Strong knowledge of programming languages (Python) & introductory Computer-Aided Design (Fusion, Onshape, etc.)
· Excellent problem-solving, initiative, and communication skills
· Passionate about empowering & working with students of all backgrounds
Preferred:
· Experience in FIRST Lego League (FLL Challenge) or FIRST programs (FRC, FTC) as a coach, mentor, or participant is highly desired
