The Traveling Utility Locator will perform critical underground utility locating services on projects across the country.
You’ll help prevent utility strikes, protect infrastructure, and promote safe construction and excavation practices.
The role combines fieldwork, specialized locating technology, map interpretation, documentation, and direct client communication.
Extensive travel is a core part of the position, with assignments supporting priority projects, surge work, and specialized field operations.
You’ll work outdoors across varied terrain and weather conditions while maintaining high standards for accuracy and safety.

- Accurately identify, locate, and mark underground utilities to support damage prevention and safe excavation.
- Read and interpret utility maps, prints, plans, and other project documentation to determine utility locations.
- Perform field locating work across grass, gravel, dirt, roadways, and other varied terrain.
- Operate effectively in outdoor conditions throughout the year, including challenging weather environments.
- Travel extensively throughout the United States and remain away from home for extended periods when project requirements demand it.
- Support day, evening, or night assignments and participate in overtime, weekend, and on-call work as required.
- Accurately complete job documentation, paperwork, reports, and other required project deliverables.
- Follow established safety practices, procedures, and field protocols at all times.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with teammates, clients, and other project stakeholders.
- Adapt to changing project requirements and perform additional related field duties as assigned.
- At least 1 year of professional utility locating experience is required.
- Previous construction experience is an advantage.
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Valid driver's license and ability to safely operate a company vehicle.
- Ability to successfully complete a physical assessment, pre-employment drug screening, and background check.
- Comfortable traveling throughout the United States and spending extended periods away from home.
- Ability to walk and work safely across varied terrain for extended periods.
- Ability to work year-round in outdoor conditions and adapt to changing environments.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate utility identification and documentation.
- Ability to read and interpret utility maps, prints, and related technical information.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working effectively with clients and field teams.
- Self-motivated, dependable, adaptable, and capable of working independently while maintaining safety and quality standards.
- Willingness to work a standard Monday–Friday schedule with additional on-call responsibilities, overtime, evenings, nights, or weekends when needed.
- Competitive pay: $21–$30 USD per hour.
