Laboratory Research Technician I

Med-Medicine - Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh - (26005328)

The Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine Division is made of up approximately 70 clinical staff and over 100 research staff who work in a variety of locations including: Bridgeside Point, Biomedical Science Tower (BST), UPMC Hospitals including Presbyterian, Shadyside, East, Jameson and Mercy. The division provides world class services across 10 inpatient services at five hospitals and over 70,000 outpatient office visits. We have a major research mission that focuses on basic, clinical, and translational research on the lung, microbiome, COVID-19, sleep medicine, and allergy and immunology.

Under general supervision, the Lab Technician I provides technical and operational support for the laboratory’s research activities. Responsibilities include preparing samples, reagents, and solutions; performing routine laboratory assays and procedures; operating and maintaining laboratory equipment; and accurately recording and entering experimental data. The position works with laboratory chemicals, potentially infectious materials, and research animals in accordance with all safety protocols.


Job Summary

Performs laboratory testing and some analysis on multiple types of specimen samples. Operates and properly sterilizes equipment and maintains inventory and assists with ordering.


Essential Functions

Process and prepare biological and research samples; perform routine laboratory assays and experimental procedures according to protocol. Prepare reagents, media, and solutions; maintain laboratory supply inventory and reorder materials. Operate, clean, calibrate, and perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment; report malfunctions. Handle and care for research animals and process specimens in compliance with IACUC and biosafety requirements. Accurately record, enter, and organize data.


Physical Effort

Standing and/or sitting for extended periods (up to 8 hours); repetitive hand and wrist motions (e.g., pipetting); manual dexterity for handling small instruments and specimens; occasional lifting and carrying of laboratory supplies and equipment up to 25 lbs.
