Job Description
HR Generalist — Sigma Commercial LLC
Location: Milwaukee, WI (East Side) — On-site
Employment Type: Full-Time
Reports To: CEO
About Us
Sigma Commercial LLC is a Milwaukee-based holding company overseeing four operating businesses: LaBonte Construction (luxury residential remodeling), Property Prep (commercial maintenance and janitorial), Vandelay Group (residential property management), and Sigma Commercial itself (shared back office). We're a small, hands-on team - people wear multiple hats and things get done without a lot of red tape.
The Role
This is a solo HR seat covering our group - no team, no direct reports, just you owning recruiting, payroll, and benefits end to end. Most of your week is recruiting: filling construction and maintenance crews with people who actually show up and do the work. The rest is running payroll accurately and keeping our benefits and insurance programs compliant.
Key Responsibilities
Recruiting
Own full-cycle hiring for blue-collar and skilled-trade roles at LaBonte Construction and Property Prep: carpenters, general laborers, maintenance techs, janitorial staff, and similar field positions
Source through job boards, trade schools, apprenticeship programs, and trade-industry referral networks
Screen applicants, schedule interviews, and coordinate final hiring decisions with entity leads
Post and manage openings across external job boards
Process new-hire paperwork and run onboarding
Payroll
Process end-to-end payroll for LaBonte Construction, Property Prep, and Sigma Commercial: timekeeping review, gross-to-net calculations, tax withholding, garnishments, and off-cycle/final paychecks
Keep payroll compliant with federal and Wisconsin state requirements
Handle payroll recordkeeping and reporting, including W-2s and quarterly filings
Benefits & Insurance Compliance
Administer group benefits (health, dental, vision, retirement) alongside our insurance broker/carrier
Run annual open enrollment and act as employees' point of contact for benefits questions and claims
Maintain ACA reporting and COBRA compliance
Handle workers' compensation administration, including policy audits and claims
Manage unemployment insurance claims and confirm correct employee classification
HR Administration
Maintain personnel files, I-9s, and required employment documentation
Track required trainings or certifications for field staff
Serve as first point of contact for day-to-day employee relations questions
Qualifications
Recruiting experience for blue-collar or skilled-trade roles: construction, maintenance, facilities, or similar
Hands-on payroll processing experience, ideally across multiple entities/EINs
Experience administering group benefits plans and workers' comp/unemployment compliance
Working knowledge of Wisconsin employment law and federal payroll/benefits basics (FLSA, ACA, COBRA)
Comfortable owning HR, payroll, and benefits solo, with no support staff
Payroll software experience preferred (Gusto, ADP, Paychex, etc.)
Strong organization and follow-through: able to run a recruiting pipeline, hit payroll deadlines, and manage compliance at the same time
Self-starter, comfortable operating independently in a small-business environment
