Process Engineer for Refinery Operations Consulting

This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Process Engineer for Refinery Operations Consulting in Canada.

This role is part of a high-impact consulting environment focused on improving refinery performance and unlocking significant operational and financial value for downstream oil and gas clients. You will work directly with major refinery operators to analyze complex processes, identify inefficiencies, and implement data-driven solutions that enhance margins and operational reliability. The position combines hands-on process engineering expertise with strategic consulting, requiring both technical depth and strong problem-solving capabilities. You will be involved in end-to-end engagements, from assessment through implementation and audit, with measurable results delivered within months. The work is field-based and highly collaborative, often taking place on-site at refinery locations across North America. This is a fast-paced role where your insights directly contribute to multi-million-dollar operational improvements.

Accountabilities:
  • Conduct in-depth refinery process analysis to identify opportunities for margin improvement, energy efficiency gains, and operational optimization.
  • Support or lead consulting engagements across assessment, execution, and audit phases within refinery environments.
  • Apply advanced engineering principles to improve blend planning, hydrocarbon loss control, energy intensity, and value chain performance.
  • Develop and validate process models, perform mass and energy balance analysis, and support optimization initiatives.
  • Utilize data analytics and engineering tools to diagnose inefficiencies and recommend actionable improvements.
  • Collaborate with client teams to implement sustainable operational changes and track performance improvements.
  • Prepare technical documentation, dashboards, and performance reports to communicate findings and recommendations.
  • Travel to client refinery sites to conduct on-site assessments and support implementation activities.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Petrochemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 3–25+ years of experience in oil & gas, refining, or downstream process industries.
  • Strong background in process engineering, refinery optimization, energy efficiency, or value chain optimization.
  • Experience with refinery performance tools and process simulation software such as Aspen HYSYS, AVEVA PRO/II, or similar platforms.
  • Advanced Excel and data analysis skills, including data mining and large dataset interpretation.
  • Experience with refinery optimization concepts such as energy intensity index (EII), linear programming, blending optimization, or mass balance analysis.
  • Exposure to process audits, KPI development, dashboards, or operational improvement frameworks is an asset.
  • Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and attention to detail in complex technical environments.
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively to refinery client sites across Canada and North America.
Benefits:
  • Competitive base salary ranging from $110,000 to $180,000 CAD annually, plus performance-based bonuses.
  • High-impact consulting work with measurable results and rapid career progression opportunities.
  • Comprehensive benefits package including health and wellness coverage.
  • Exposure to leading refinery operators and large-scale industrial transformation projects.
  • Fast-track development into subject matter expertise roles within process engineering consulting.
  • Performance-driven culture with strong recognition and advancement opportunities.
  • Travel opportunities across North American refinery sites.
  • Collaborative, results-oriented environment focused on operational excellence and client impact.
