Position Purpose: The Lead Carpenter is responsible for supervising and performing skilled carpentry work throughout the hospital, ensuring safe, high-quality, and code-compliant construction, repair, and maintenance of building structures and finishes. This position plays a key role in maintaining the physical environment of care essential to patient safety and clinical operations. The Lead Carpenter oversees preventive and corrective maintenance programs, supports capital improvement and renovation projects, and ensures compliance with regulatory standards including Joint Commission, Life Safety Code requirements, and local building codes.

Key Job Activities:

• Supervision & Coordination Leads and schedules the daily activities of carpenters and carpentry contractors.
• Provides guidance, mentorship, and technical support to carpentry team members.
• Coordinates with clinical and support departments to minimize disruption of hospital operations during construction and repair work. Facility Maintenance & Compliance
• Inspects, repairs, and maintains hospital building components including doors, frames, cabinetry, ceilings, walls, flooring transitions, millwork, and structural elements.
• Ensures work complies with Life Safety Code requirements, Joint Commission standards, CMS requirements, and applicable building codes.
• Manages documentation for inspections, repairs, and preventive maintenance schedules.
• Ensures all work supports infection control risk assessment (ICRA) procedures and maintains the integrity of fire-rated assemblies.

Project Oversight

• Participates in planning and execution of capital improvement and renovation projects involving building structures and interior finishes.
• Reviews and interprets blueprints, architectural drawings, and project specifications.
• Coordinates with contractors, project managers, engineers, and facility leadership to ensure work meets project timelines and hospital standards.

Emergency Response

• Serves as a primary contact for urgent structural or facility issues such as damaged doors, ceiling failures, or building safety concerns.
• Supports Facility Incident Command during emergencies or facility disruptions.
• Assists with maintaining life safety systems including fire-rated walls, doors, smoke barriers, and exit pathways.

Inventory & Reporting

• Maintains inventory of tools, materials, hardware, and critical building components.
• Oversees procurement requests and aligns purchases with departmental budgets.
• Documents completed work for compliance, audits, and internal reporting. Training & Safety
• Ensures compliance with safety standards, including OSHA regulations and hospital safety policies.
• Provides training and guidance to junior carpenters and maintenance staff.
• Reinforces safe work practices and participates in hospital safety initiatives.
• Serves on the Fire Response and Safety Committees as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Work Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Technical training or completion of an accredited carpentry apprenticeship program preferred.
• Relevant carpentry or construction certifications preferred
• Minimum of 7 years of experience in carpentry or building maintenance, with at least 2 years in a lead or supervisory role.
• Healthcare, institutional, or commercial facilities experience preferred.
