YOU will administer emergency medical, basic, and advanced life support services in a 911 setting to the members and visitors of our Hampton community under the direction our Operational Medical Doctor.

Examples of Work may Include:

• Responsible for responding to emergency situations, providing advanced pre-hospital emergency medical services, transporting patients for further care, training, and preparing related logs, records, and reports.

• Responsible for serving as a member of a medical crew, directing others in administering medical care, and providing patient information to medical facilities.

• Diagnoses and performs basic and advanced life support services using equipment such as an EKG monitor and defibrillator, advanced pre-hospital coronary observation radio, suction equipment, esophageal obturator airway, intubation equipment, intravenous therapy equipment and medications per instructions from the physician in the hospital emergency department.

• Confers with physicians via telemetry radio for further diagnosis of patient's condition. Exercises independent judgment and makes medical decisions concerning proper treatment of patient when communications cannot be established with the physician.

• Computes dosages of medications and drugs prior to administering to patients. Administers all medicines and drugs under the direction of the physician or according to established protocols. Maintains drug box to ensure no theft or vandalism of drugs and medicines.

• Maintains proper inventory of equipment and supplies as required by state and departmental guidelines/regulations. Cleans and sanitizes ambulances and equipment daily as needed and maintains the cleanliness of and perform minor maintenance to fire stations.

• Accompanies patients to the emergency room at the hospital, assists the physician, and nurses with the care of the patients as they are brought into the hospital.

• Completes all necessary paperwork and forms. Ensures all supplies are refilled and the vehicle is operational before returning to the fire station. Maintains all emergency medical equipment and paramedic vehicles.

• Operates emergency ambulances and other light duty emergency medical response vehicle; follow all state, regional, local, and departmental emergency medical services regulations, guidelines and protocols, coordinates with fire, police, and other public safety agencies to facilitate patient care in Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH) environments such as confined space, entrapments, structural fires, and rescue operations etc.

• Assists in training of Fire Division personnel in basic life support functions. Assists with training personnel in cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedures and principles of emergency medical care. Serves as a preceptor to assist Division personnel to gain knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience in the field of EMS.

Requires a high school diploma or GED, supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to successful completion of the Virginia Emergency Medical Technician – Intermediate or Paramedic Program.

Requires a minimum of one year of progressive EMS experience. Must possess EMT-Paramedic or EMT-Intermediate from the Commonwealth of Virginia or National Registry. Required to be a released ALS provider within 12 months of employment in the Peninsula's EMS Region.

Must possess and maintain the following certifications: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS); Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or Pediatric Education for Pre-hospital Professionals (PEPP) when required. Must successfully complete the Emergency Vehicle Operator’s course. Must successfully complete NIMS 100, 200, 700 and 800. Must maintain, at a minimum, current Virginia Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) – I certification. Must possess and maintain the following certifications: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or Pediatric Education for Pre-hospital Professionals (PEPP) when required.

Must successfully complete a pre-employment background screening to include, but not limited to, polygraph examinations, Department of Social Services, Office of EMS, and State Police. Must successfully complete a physical examination when required.

Must possess a valid driver's license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
Duties may be performed on various shifts to include 8 -12-hour shifts, or 40 hours per workweek accordance with all applicable Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) guidelines. The incumbent is considered “essential personnel” during City emergencies or at the direction of the City Manager, which may include long hours and unusual schedules. This is a non-exempt position.
