About This Position

UM Campus Dining invites applications for a Assistant Manager of UM Catering to oversee direct operational supervision of catering events. This position is responsible for all front-of-the-house student personnel functions. You will supervise the delivery, setup, service and breakdown of small and large catering events, at times multiple events at once. This position reports directly to the catering events manager and assists with fiscal and personnel management of Catering. In the absence of the events manager and catering manager you will assume the role of manager.


  • Assist with personnel management for student and full-time employees including recruitment, scheduling, and performance management.
  • Help in developing and implementing a complex unit operating plan, unit budget, and unit assessment
  • Collaborate with the Catering Executive Sous Chef in hiring and scheduling for the student culinary staff.
  • Assist with effective labor management, ordering of supplies, inventories of supplies and maintenance of equipment
  • Develop and maintain positive professional relationships with clients at events and act as a liaison during the events
  • Collaborate with various department across campus on catering for events
  • Maintain a safe and sanitary work environment by ensuring that all sanitation, food handling and safety regulations are followed at all times
  • Direct and supervise up to 75 student employees including all catering service employees, the Catering Services Supervisor, and assists kitchen management with back of house student employees

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Will obtain ServSafe Management Certification within six (6) months of employment
  • Will obtain Safe Campus Driving Certification with one (1) month of employment
  • Expert knowledge of event setup and decorations for special events
  • Excellent communication skills for working directly with guests and the catering client
  • Working knowledge of menu planning and development, and typical foodservice equipment
  • Working knowledge of inventory, food and labor expenses, budgets, report analysis, and revenue generation in collegiate foodservice
  • Experience working with college students as employees
  • Experience working within a union environment
  • Active participation in appropriate professional organizations such as NACUFS, ACF, etc.
  • Experience with sustainability initiatives such as serving local foods, composting programs, and similar sustainable business practices

Position Number: 101400

Compensation Title: Culinary Services Assistant Manager

Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Hours vary for events, 12 months/year

Probationary Period: Six (6) months minimum

Benefits Include: Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
