About This Position
This position performs a wide variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks to provide structure defensible space clearing, vegetation management, fire fuels abatement, and related tasks to make the community Safer from Wildfire. This position is seasonal with expected time frame of April-October.
- Participates in the assignments to designated projects, such as structure defensible space clearing, utility right-of-way fuels reduction, community safety fuels reduction, street, and roadway right-of-way fuels reduction, as well as other community beneficial projects.
- Maintains an adequate level of physical fitness to meet job requirements. Keeps abreast of new tactics, procedures, programs, and technologies with relation to the job assignments.
- Assists in maintaining crew vehicles, assigned facilities and related grounds, equipment and supplies during a work shift to ensure that all apparatus, equipment, facilities, and supplies are in a readily available, safe, and useful condition.
- Participates in orientation and training in various aspects of fuels abatement, mitigation, and related activities.
- Perform heavy routine manual labor using hand and power tools in all vegetation fuels types, along the right-of-way and on public and private property in support of defensible space and other vegetation maintenance activities.
- Load and unload material.
- Excavate and backfill trenches with appropriate hand tools.
- Clean gutters, drains and culverts.
- Rake leaves, clean grounds, cut weeds, clear brush, and trim trees.
- Operate, clean, and maintain basic tools and equipment used on the job.
- May operate pick-up truck or similar non-Class B vehicles.
- Work around heavy equipment performing mechanized abatement activities.
- Perform duties in conjunction with volunteer and/or emergency services forces.
- Perform similar functions in support of public work personnel performing street, water, sewer, parks, facilities, and maintenance activities.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and the community using principles of good customer service.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
High School diploma or equivalent. Some paid experience in manual labor desired.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge of:
- Issues, problems, principles, and practices associated with fire fuels mitigation and abatement.
- Use, maintenance, and application of basic hand tools and powered hand tools.
- Safe work practices.
Ability to:
- Perform heavy manual labor.
- Perform various fuel modification tasks, including cutting, pruning, limbing, felling, scrapping, grubbing, piling, pulling, pushing, digging, burying, burning piles, and other fuel modification tasks as assigned.
- Properly use various tools, which may include one or more of the following, depending upon complexity of the task and training/certification: power mower or trimmer, chainsaw, brush saw, Pulaski, McLeod, shovel, lopper, hand pruner, and bow saw.
- Follow directions given by a supervisor or superior crew member.
- Work diligently and hard in the implementation of fuels reduction activities.
- Work in conditions that may encompass all types of weather, from hot, cold, wet, or windy.
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
- Read and write at the level necessary to perform and carry out directions.
