Medical Laboratory Technician - Generalist
Job Description:
Under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Manager and Lead Medical Technologist, the Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for providing efficient and accurate analysis of specimens processed in the laboratory, performing the tasks involved in the daily operation demonstrating knowledge and skills in performing laboratory tests according to established laboratory protocols.
- Determines the suitability and acceptability of specimens by verifying patient demographic information, document receipt and recognize erroneous and rejects as necessary
- Performs specimen processing and ordering laboratory tests in the LIS
- Performs and documents results of all quality control according to procedures and be able to troubleshoot and address any out-of-control results
- Performs routine laboratory testing accurately according to established policy and procedure
- Evaluates and verifies all test results for correctness, recognizes abnormal test results and performs appropriate problem-solving procedures in a timely manner including holding patient results until issue is addressed
- Performs laboratory equipment maintenance according to schedule and ensures that it is properly functioning prior to any calibration and or testing quality control
- Follows laboratory protocol and or manufacturer in calling technical support for assistance in troubleshooting laboratory instruments
- Maintains competencies as scheduled following the 6 elements to perform duties and maintains industry awareness for new developments
- Performs department specific proficiency testing as it arrives and submit on a timely manner
- Provides assistance in inventory monitoring, ordering and properly storage of laboratory supplies and reagents, utilizes supplies and reagents in a non-wasteful manner
- Ensure that physician orders are obtained for all laboratory procedures performed
- Involved and assist with preparation of CAP inspection
- Maintain a clean, organized work area and perform daily logs for temperatures and other daily tasks required in the laboratory
- Keeps current with changes in laboratory procedures and makes pertinent observations in regard to department needs and office suggestions
- Shows ability to handle unexpected situations and is able to exercise independent thought and action, observes confidentiality, both with patient information and co-workers following the HIPPA protocol
- Maintains good interpersonal relationships with co-workers and other HMU staff, offering help when able promoting a pleasant and harmonious work environment
- Accepts accountability for actions and assumes responsibility for own behavior
- Reliable and maintains a high level of customer service at all times with professionalism and courtesy
Requirements:Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology
Preferred:
- 2 years of MLT experience
- Proficiency in MS Office suites such as Word and Excel
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Must be detail-oriented
- Strong oral; written communication and organization skills
- Working knowledge of Chemistry
