At Firestorm, we are building the future of expeditionary defense manufacturing and autonomous systems. Modern conflict has exposed a fundamental problem: the systems needed most by operators are often too expensive, too slow to produce, and too difficult to sustain at scale. Firestorm exists to change that.
We develop mission-adaptable aerial systems and deployable manufacturing infrastructure designed to put capability directly into the hands of the warfighter. From modular unmanned aircraft to xCell -- our deployable microfactory -- our goal is to make defense systems rapidly deployable, adaptable, and producible at the point of need.
We are looking for builders, operators, and problem-solvers who want to work on meaningful technology with real-world impact.
About the RoleAs a Sr. Mechanical Test & Evaluation Engineer, you will be the cornerstone of our hardware validation process. You will bridge the gap between design and deployment, ensuring our mission-adaptable UAVs meet the rigorous demands of the field. You will lead the development of testing protocols for advanced airframes and metallic components, utilizing your expertise in material science and structural analysis to drive the safety and reliability of our next-generation aerial platforms.
- Lead mechanical testing and physical characterization efforts to validate material performance and structural integrity of components and assemblies.
- Author comprehensive test plans and reports for the evaluation of aircraft fuselage and structural components.
- Apply industry-accepted statistical analysis methods, such as CMH-17, to interpret test data and inform design decisions.
- Use SolidWorks to design custom test fixturing required for specialized material and assembly testing.
- Utilize non-destructive inspection (NDI) methods and precision measurement tools to verify aircraft part quality.
- Maintain a hands-on presence on the shop floor to improve manufacturing and inspection technologies.
- Effectively present technical topics and findings to upper leadership.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Materials Engineering with a strong understanding of material structure, processing, performance, and failure.
- 5+ years of experience as a mechanical test engineer working on structural airframe testing and validation.
- Experience with ASTM or ISO test methods.
- 7+ years of experience in CAD modeling and drafting, with SolidWorks preferred.
- Strong background in developing test procedures, identifying the required equipment, instrumentation, and evaluation criteria.
- Experience in stress analysis methods, including the use of hand calculations.
- Demonstrated ability to author detailed technical reports and follow complex work instructions via computer applications.
- U.S. Citizenship required due to ITAR regulations & the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance
- Experience with cyclic or fatigue testing of both composite and metallic materials.
- Deep familiarity with materials and process specifications used in aerospace manufacturing.
- Expertise in non-destructive inspection (NDI) methods and structural testing, as well as design limit load and ultimate load testing (testing to failure).
- Familiarity with shop floor manufacturing and inspection technologies.
- Familiarity with environmental testing and qualification per MIL-STD-810.
- Based at our Headquarters in San Diego, CA.
- This role requires an on-site presence.
- Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs. and wear appropriate PPE [as required].
- Willingness to travel up to 10% domestically for testing and demonstrations.
- Ability to work flexible hours and travel to various testing locations as needed.
