Job Description
The Job Coach (Employment Specialist) is primarily responsible for supporting students with disabilities in real-world work environments to ensure successful employment outcomes. This role focuses on on-site job coaching, skill development, and workplace readiness, helping students build independence and sustain employment.
The Job Coach works under the direction of the Director of Vocational Rehabilitation and collaborates with VR counselors, school leadership, and community partners to ensure each student receives the support needed to transition successfully into the workforce.
This position requires strong interpersonal skills, consistency in the field, accurate documentation, and reliable transportation to support students at various job sites.
Core Responsibilities (Primary Focus: Job Coaching)
Provide Job Coaching (Primary Function)
- Deliver on-site job coaching to students at their assigned work locations
- Teach and reinforce job-specific tasks, workplace expectations, and safety protocols
- Provide real-time feedback and hands-on support to ensure student success
- Gradually fade support to promote independence
Support Student Employment Success
- Monitor student performance and progress toward employment goals
- Identify barriers and provide solutions to improve job retention
- Maintain consistent communication with students, employers, and families as needed
Serve as Liaison
- Act as the bridge between students, employers, and VR counselors
- Maintain professional relationships with job site supervisors
- Address workplace concerns in a timely and solution-oriented manner
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate and timely records of:
- Job coaching sessions
- Student progress and performance
- Employer feedback
- Submit all required documentation and deliverables in alignment with VR expectations
Community Engagement
- Support the development of employment opportunities by maintaining relationships with local businesses
- Assist in identifying appropriate job placements for students
Before Shift Begins
☐ Clock in (recommended 15 minutes prior to start)
☐ Review assigned students and job site schedules
☐ Prepare materials needed for job coaching
During Shift (Field-Based Work)
☐ Travel to assigned job sites
☐ Provide direct, on-site job coaching support
☐ Observe and assess student performance
☐ Communicate with employer/supervisor as needed
☐ Document session notes and progress updates
☐ Address any immediate concerns impacting student success
After Shift
☐ Submit daily wrap-up, including:
- Student progress
- Goals met / not met
- Any concerns or required follow-up
Additional Responsibilities
☐ Participate in student orientations and program events as needed
☐ Attend required staff meetings
☐ Support transition planning in collaboration with the team
☐ Promote Pre-ETS services when appropriate
