POSITION SUMMARY:
The goal of the Band Teacher is to supervise and coordinate the instrumental activities of students and to support each participant in achieving a higher level of personal skill and in gaining an enhanced appreciation for music using skills and techniques of artistic expression consistent with school guidelines.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Gospel Values: Teach goodness, discipline, and knowledge through gospel values, integrating the Catholic Lens and the Aquinas mission in all instruction.
- Music Instruction: Teach knowledge and skills in instrumental music for classes and individual student lessons.
- Student Recruitment: Communicate with the student body and actively encourages participation in band activities.
- Performances: Plan, rehearse, and direct musical experiences for the school and community with a minimum of two evening performances per school year.
- School Support: Provide musical support for Aquinas community activities, assemblies, and events.
- Collaboration: Collaborate with colleagues for resources and feedback on instruction, assessment, academic achievement, and student performance.
- Student Growth: Promote achievement for all students by utilizing formal and informal assessment tools and knowledge of human development to employ appropriate learning activities.
- Classroom Management: Establish and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive, and safe music room environment.
- Safety: Provide appropriate safety instruction and conducts regular safety checks on musical instruments, storage units, and equipment.
- Communication: Make learning objectives clear to students and parents, and regularly communicates with parents outside of report cards and scheduled conferences.
- Critical Thinking: Challenge students to think critically and build on prior knowledge and experience.
- School Presence: Attend all faculty meetings, workshops, faculty/staff retreats, school masses, assemblies, and celebrations.
- Administrative Duties: Maintain teacher web pages, post weekly updates of assignments and grades on the web portal, and produce interim, quarterly, and semester grades.
- Professional Ethics: Understand and carries out moral and legal responsibilities as a teacher.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Professional Growth: Reflect critically upon teaching experiences, identify areas for further development linked to school philosophy, and remain receptive to suggestions for growth.
- Curriculum Support: Maintain consistency in grading procedures.
- Committee Work: May participate in various school-related committees as needed.
- Schedule Flexibility: May be required to work additional days outside of the school year calendar.
- Assigned Duties: Perform other duties assigned by the department chair, assistant principal, or principal.

Knowledge and Experience:
- Education: Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education required.
- Certification: Teaching Certification preferred.
- Experience: Two years of prior teaching experience preferred.
Skills and Abilities:
- Relationship Building: Strong interpersonal skills to initiate and develop open, respectful, positive, and cooperative relationships with students.
- Communication: Excellent leadership and communication skills. Must speak with appropriate volume, vocabulary, and expression in English to be readily understood and set a good example.
- Collaboration: Collaborative skills to work with colleagues in developing curriculum, assessments, and lesson plans as necessary.
- Engagement: Proven ability to motivate, hold the interest of students, develop rapport, and manage classroom behavior.
- Technology: Basic technological skills required for grading portals and classroom communication tools.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Environment: Routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copiers, and web portals.
- Physical Demands: Majority of classroom time is spent sitting, standing, moving about the classroom, and handling musical instruments of varying sizes and weights.
- Hours: Standard school schedule is 7:45 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Candidate must have the flexibility to work outside the standard school schedule for music lessons, rehearsals, and evening concerts.
