Job Title
ITS Technical and Applications Intern
Job Summary
The IT Technical and Applications Intern is a seasonal, temporary position designed for students currently enrolled in a Computer Science, Information Technology, Health Informatics, or closely related degree program. This role provides immersive, entry-level experience within a healthcare IT environment, offering exposure to a broad range of technical and clinical application functions. The intern will support day-to-day operations across Desktop Support and End-User Services, Desktop Support and Support Services operations, Cybersecurity awareness and basic practices, and Clinical Applications and MEDITECH Expanse support. This position is structured to complement the academic requirements of the student’s college or university program, including any required documentation, reporting, and timeframe requirements established by the academic institution. The intern will work under direct supervision, completing entry-level tasks, gaining foundational IT skills, and developing a working knowledge of healthcare information technology in a Critical Access Hospital and multi-clinic environment.
This is a temporary position expected to last no longer than 12 weeks.
Compensation
We are committed to providing compensation information for all open positions. The hourly wage for this position is $20.00.
Key Accountabilities
Desktop and End-User Support
  • Assist with deployment, imaging, and basic configuration of desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and peripheral devices under the supervision of ITS staff.
  • Perform routine hardware and software troubleshooting for end-user devices, escalating complex issues to senior technicians as appropriate.
  • Support asset inventory tracking and basic device lifecycle activities including tagging, documentation, and equipment preparation for deployment or retirement.
  • Assist with printer, phone, and other peripheral setup, maintenance, and basic troubleshooting.
Service Desk and Support Services
  • Respond to and assist with incoming service requests and support services tickets using the IT service management (ITSM) system, following established ticket logging and documentation procedures.
  • Provide basic first-level support for common user issues including password resets, account access, software navigation, and connectivity problems.
  • Maintain accurate and timely ticket documentation and escalate unresolved issues to appropriate ITS team members per established triage guidelines.
  • Deliver courteous, professional customer service interactions consistent with NH&C’s patient and customer experience standards.
Cybersecurity Awareness and Basic Practices
  • Adhere to NH&C information security policies, HIPAA regulations, and patient data confidentiality requirements throughout the internship.
  • Support basic endpoint security practices including identifying phishing attempts, verifying software compliance, and assisting with security awareness initiatives under ITS direction.
  • Observe and participate in cybersecurity-related activities such as vulnerability scanning support, user awareness training preparation, and policy review exercises as directed.
  • Report potential security incidents, suspicious activity, or policy concerns to the supervising ITS staff member promptly.
Clinical Applications Support
  • Observe and assist ITS Clinical Application staff in supporting the MEDITECH Expanse Electronic Health Record (EHR) system, gaining exposure to system navigation, user access processes, and basic operational workflows.
  • Assist with basic clinical application support tasks such as user access requests, data entry verification, and simple application navigation assistance for end-users as directed.
  • Participate in observational opportunities with clinical department workflows to develop an understanding of how clinical applications support patient care delivery in a hospital and ambulatory setting.
Documentation, Reporting, and Academic Requirements
  • Complete all reporting, journaling, evaluations, or documentation required by the academic institution in a timely and professional manner, coordinating with the ITS supervisor as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records of tasks completed, skills learned, and projects participated in, supporting both ITS team knowledge-sharing and academic program deliverables.
  • Participate in regular check-ins with the ITS supervisor to review progress, set learning objectives, and ensure alignment with academic program requirements.
Required Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university program in Computer Science, Information Technology, Health Informatics, Information Systems, or a closely related field.
  • Basic working knowledge of Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office 365 applications, and general computer navigation.
  • Strong customer service orientation, professional communication skills, and willingness to work collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of patient and organizational information in compliance with HIPAA.
  • Demonstrated eagerness to learn, receptiveness to feedback, and ability to follow instructions with attention to detail.
  • Availability and schedule must align with academic program requirements, including any designated timeframe, credit hour minimums, or required supervision documentation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous coursework or hands-on experience in networking, cybersecurity, database management, or health informatics.
  • Any prior experience in a healthcare, clinical, or patient care adjacent environment.
  • Exposure to Electronic Health Record systems, particularly MEDITECH Expanse, through coursework or prior experience.
Schedule
  • 80 hours per two-week pay period
  • 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday–Friday
  • Occasional weekend hours may be required to support special projects, maintenance activities, implementations, and other operational needs
