Job Description
Overview
The Staff Systems Engineer serves as the principal technical architect and engineering authority across the entire End User Support Operations Support (EUSOS) ecosystem. In this elite technical role, you will design, optimize, and secure the foundational enterprise deployment structures, endpoint management baselines, and cross-functional technology integrations that power over 15,000 distributed federal workers, patent examiners, and trademark specialists. You will operate at the intersection of long-term architectural strategy and high-tier escalation engineering. Rather than managing daily technician schedules, you will build the technical automation frameworks, author configuration profiles, and bridge critical gaps between Warehouse Lifecycle Operations, Network Operations & Maintenance, and Security Operations & Enterprise Monitoring branches.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead the engineering strategies that bind end-user devices to backend systems. Ensure endpoint hardware images, virtualization layers, and application delivery networks operate seamlessly across the USPTO main campus and remote regional hubs
- Collaborate intimately with the Security Operations & Enterprise Monitoring division. Architect, implement, and maintain system baselines matching NIST 800-53 controls, ensuring rapid deployment of critical security patches and phishing defense configurations
- Partner with Network Operations to design optimal endpoint routing architectures, split-tunneling VPN configurations, and Quality of Service (QoS) mappings to guarantee crystal-clear performance for distributed voice and video traffic
- Develop, test, and maintain robust enterprise deployment scripts and automation playbooks to accelerate hardware provisioning and imaging workflows
- Act as the ultimate engineering backstop for the program. Own and resolve complex, systemic infrastructure failures or elusive software conflicts that defeat standard Tier 1–3 regional escalation paths
- Spearhead technical forensic investigations into multi-system, recurring outages. Formulate technical remediation strategies and permanent platform-wide fixes
- Provide forward-looking technical advice to contract directors and federal IT executives, translating broad agency mission goals into concrete systems engineering milestones
- Design, curate, and review macro-level system engineering standard operating procedures. Maintain the absolute single source of truth within the enterprise Microsoft SharePoint and Microsoft Loop knowledge environments
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements
- Experience: Minimum of 8–10+ years of progressive, hands-on experience in enterprise-scale systems engineering, client platform architecture, or infrastructure administration
- Advanced master-level command of unified endpoint management architectures (such as Microsoft Intune, MECM/SCCM, Group Policy Objects) across hybrid Windows 10/11 and macOS environments.
- Proficient in automated configuration management, scripting, and infrastructure orchestration (e.g., PowerShell, Bash, Python)
- Deep understanding of enterprise virtualization technologies, identity management ecosystems (Active Directory, Azure AD/Entra ID), and multi-factor authentication protocols
- Thorough technical knowledge of enterprise networking topology (firewall traversal, routing, DNS, DHCP, and secure VPN clients) paired with experience optimizing Unified Communications configurations
Educational Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a closely related engineering field (or equivalent master-level technical experience
