Job Description: Fire Watch / Safety Patrol Officer

Position Summary

The Fire Watch / Safety Patrol Officer is responsible for continuously monitoring assigned areas of the facility to detect and prevent fire hazards, ensure clear and functional emergency egress routes, and respond immediately to any signs of fire or smoke. This role requires undivided attention to safety duties at all times, with no other assigned tasks or distractions during shift hours.

Key Responsibilities

Daily Patrols and Inspections

• Walk through all assigned zones, rooms, and stairwells every 15 to 30 minutes.
• Look and smell for signs of smoke, unusual heat, or actual flames.
• Check that all exit doors and hallways are open and completely free of clutter.
• Verify that fire extinguishers are easily accessible, visible, and ready for use.
• Ensure fire doors remain closed at all times and are never propped open.

Emergency Response Actions

• Call 911 immediately upon spotting a fire or a dangerous amount of smoke.
• Alert people nearby using alarms, air horns, or loud verbal warnings to evacuate the building.
• Use a portable fire extinguisher only on very small, contained fires, and only if it is safe to do so.
• Guide occupants toward safe exits during an evacuation.

Documentation and Compliance

• Record the exact time of every completed patrol in a logbook.
• Document any safety hazards identified, including when and how they were corrected.
• Remain fully focused on safety and patrol duties throughout the shift, with no other assigned responsibilities or distractions.

Requirements

• Ability to walk continuously and climb stairs for extended periods.
• Strong attention to detail and sense of situational awareness.
• Ability to remain calm and act decisively during emergencies.
• Basic knowledge of fire extinguisher operation and evacuation procedures (training provided if needed).
• Reliable, punctual, and able to work assigned shifts, including nights, weekends, or holidays as required.

Working Conditions

• Continuous walking and standing throughout the shift.
• May involve exposure to smoke, heat, or emergency conditions in the event of an incident.
• Indoor and/or outdoor patrol areas depending on facility layout.

Reporting

This position typically reports to a Facility Safety Manager, Security Supervisor, or equivalent, and may require coordination with local fire department personnel during inspections or emergencies.
