Staff Engineer, DevOps

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Engineer, DevOps based in the United States.

This is a high-impact engineering opportunity focused on building secure, reliable, and scalable infrastructure for mission-driven digital services in healthcare.
You will help shape DevOps and cloud engineering practices across critical applications, microservices, and APIs running on AWS.
The role combines hands-on technical delivery with architecture, automation, observability, security, and continuous improvement.
You will work closely with software engineers, product leaders, client stakeholders, and cross-functional teams throughout the software development lifecycle.
Your expertise will help strengthen deployment pipelines, system resilience, application performance, and compliance with public-sector requirements.
You will also mentor engineers, contribute to technical decisions, and promote modern engineering practices across the team.

Accountabilities
  • Design, implement, and maintain CI/CD pipelines, containerization technologies, and Infrastructure as Code solutions in alignment with DevSecOps principles.
  • Build and manage infrastructure supporting microservices and APIs on AWS, with a focus on reliability, scalability, security, and maintainability.
  • Develop and maintain monitoring, logging, observability, and performance optimization solutions to improve system resilience and operational visibility.
  • Participate in security reviews, risk assessments, vulnerability management, and remediation activities across applications, infrastructure, and cloud environments.
  • Support the implementation and maintenance of security, compliance, and governance policies within AWS environments.
  • Manage containerized, microservices-based architectures and orchestration using technologies such as Docker and Amazon ECS.
  • Collaborate with software development teams to troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure, application, deployment, and production issues.
  • Ensure the availability, performance, security, and scalability of applications and supporting systems.
  • Implement industry best practices for system hardening, configuration management, and secure infrastructure operations.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and provide timely technical support for production systems.
  • Monitor system logs and activity, proactively identify potential issues, and take action to prevent service disruptions.
  • Contribute to software development across frontend and backend technologies when needed, ensuring applications remain functional, scalable, secure, and performant.
  • Participate in architecture and design discussions, providing technical expertise and helping evaluate technologies, frameworks, and tools.
  • Conduct thorough code and design reviews, offering constructive feedback and identifying risks or opportunities for improvement.
  • Debug software defects and proactively address potential technical issues before they affect users.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including architecture diagrams, API specifications, operational procedures, and user guides.
  • Mentor and support junior engineers while fostering an inclusive, collaborative, and high-performing team environment.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies, including stand-ups, sprint planning, retrospectives, estimation, prioritization, and planning activities.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies, frameworks, tools, and engineering practices to identify opportunities for innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with product managers, stakeholders, and client teams to ensure technical solutions align with business and user needs.
  • Contribute to quality assurance activities, including test planning, test automation, defect tracking, performance testing, and security testing.
  • Help establish quality standards and metrics throughout the software development lifecycle while ensuring applicable regulatory and compliance requirements are met.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, and/or equivalent professional experience in DevOps, system administration, software engineering, or a similar discipline.
  • Strong proficiency with Git and modern software development workflows.
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD platforms such as Jenkins and GitHub Actions.
  • Strong experience with AWS services, including technologies such as ECS, Lambda, RDS, CloudWatch, IAM, and the AWS CLI.
  • Proven experience implementing Infrastructure as Code using Terraform or comparable tools.
  • Strong knowledge of containerization and orchestration technologies, particularly Docker and Amazon ECS.
  • Solid understanding of networking fundamentals, including firewalls, load balancers, DNS, and other infrastructure components.
  • Proficiency in at least one scripting language, with Bash or Zsh preferred.
  • Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, analytical, and attention-to-detail skills.
  • Ability to design and implement secure, scalable, highly available cloud infrastructure.
  • Experience applying DevSecOps principles across development, deployment, monitoring, and infrastructure operations.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with engineers, product teams, clients, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to contribute to architecture and design decisions while maintaining a hands-on engineering approach.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and sharing technical knowledge within a collaborative team environment.
  • Prior software development experience with JavaScript/TypeScript, Java, Go, Python, or similar languages is a plus.
  • AWS Associate or Professional certifications are advantageous.
  • Experience with monitoring and logging tools such as CloudWatch or New Relic is preferred.
  • Experience working with PostgreSQL and DynamoDB is a plus.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or Green Card holder; visa sponsorship is not available.
  • Must have maintained U.S. residency for at least the past three years.
  • Must be able to meet the requirements for a Public Trust position, including successfully completing a U.S. government background investigation.
