Essential Functions

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in cataloging, metadata, and applicable national standards and practices; provide guidance to staff and management and consult on or lead related projects and initiatives in collaboration with the Library Systems Manager, vendors, and other stakeholders.
  • Evaluate and maintain the quality, accuracy, consistency, and integrity of catalog and metadata records; coordinate and perform catalog and database maintenance and data remediation activities, such as original and complex copy cataloging, review and processing of vendor-supplied records, record auditing, batch loading and editing, global updates, authority control processes, data cleanup and enrichment, OCLC record and holdings maintenance, and other advanced database maintenance activities.
  • Analyze cataloging, metadata, and related acquisitions procedures and workflows within the Collections & Technical Services Division; develop and recommend standardized procedures, quality-control practices, and improvements, and support their implementation in collaboration with management and staff.
  • Develop and provide training, documentation, guidance, and ongoing support to staff regarding cataloging, metadata, related acquisitions procedures, standards, workflows, and tools.
  • Analyze and resolve complex or non-routine bibliographic, metadata, catalog, and database issues; collaborate with the Library Systems Manager, vendors, and other stakeholders when issues involve broader system functionality or impacts.
  • Attend meetings and participate in committees and/or organizations that further the Library’s mission and goals.
  • Keep informed of current library, cataloging, metadata, acquisitions, and related technology practices by attending workshops and educational programs or reading specialized literature.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

Duties are considered non-essential and include the following:

  • May create MARC records for inclusion in OCLC; upgrade and edit records; and add OCLC records to the library’s catalog.

The position functions under moderate supervision with guidance available as needed and exercises professional judgment in applying established standards, practices, and procedures and addressing non-routine issues.

The position may directly supervise staff and will regularly answer questions and provide guidance and expertise to staff and managers regarding cataloging, metadata, related procedures, and workflows. The position may provide direction to staff when leading assigned projects or implementing approved procedures and changes.

Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association-accredited program.
  • Three to five years of progressively responsible professional library experience, including experience in cataloging, metadata, acquisitions, or a closely related area, using SirsiDynix or a comparable Integrated Library System (ILS).
  • One to three years of supervisory or lead experience is preferred.
