OVERVIEW
Reach New Heights!
ARCTOS Technology Solutions, LLC (ARCTOS) is a fast-growing, technology-oriented small business providing aerospace, defense, and digital solutions, with offices and work sites across the United States. We’re looking for team-oriented innovators eager to tackle interesting challenges, work on important problems, and receive great benefits and employee support.
REQUIREMENT
ARCTOS is actively seeking a Research Scientist to join our Aerospace Structures and Materials team.
As a member of the team, the Research Associate will provide onsite experimental support for the development and characterization of materials designed for dynamic environments. This role focuses on Al- and Ni-based alloys, and their respective processing/manufacturing pathways (thermomechanical process, additive/advanced manufacturing, etc). The successful candidate will balance hands-on laboratory execution with the intellectual curiosity required to perform deep dives into foundational science, investigating the “why” behind material behaviors in dynamic environments.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Processing & Fabrication Support
- Assist in the execution of manufacturing pathways, including thermomechanical processing (extrusion, uniaxial compaction, arc-melting) and advanced/additive manufacturing routes (LPBF).
- Metallography & Microstructural Characterization
- Lead onsite sample preparation (sectioning, mounding, polishing, etc.)
- Perform microstructural analysis using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, etc., to evaluate the impact of processing on material structure and formulate structure-property-performance relationships.
- Thermal & Mechanical Testing
- Conduct calorimetry (DSC/TGA) to determine reaction kinetics for RMs and support mechanical testing suites to characterize material performance under various load conditions.
- Scientific Inquiry & Deep Dives
- Proactively engage with the foundational science of the project. This includes investigating basic science questions- such as phase stability, interface reactions, or deformation mechanisms- through independent research and literature reviews.
- Team Collaboration & Reporting
- Document all experimental procedures and findings.
- Work closely with the broader research team to provide high-quality data that informs the next-gen of material design.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Familiarity with the mechanics of thermomechanical processing or the principles of AM.
- Practical experience in metallography and the use of materials characterization tools.
- A strong desire to dig into the basic science of a problem; the ability to show initiative in learning new concepts or troubleshooting complex material behaviors.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for effective documentation and knowledge transfer.
- Experience working in a collaborative research environment.
EDUCATIONAL, CLEARANCE AND CERTIFICATION
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Materials Science or Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- U.S. citizenship is required
PHYSICAL/WORKING ENVIRONMENT
- Primary work environment is a hybrid of a standard office setting and remote.
TRAVEL
- Anticipated travel to government and client sites in the CONUS up to 10% and will performed will be under the guidelines of Federal Travel Regulations and/or Joint Travel Regulations.
