As an EHS Specialist II at ASI, you are an intermediate EHS practitioner who provides strong field presence and operational support across shop, test track, and facility operations. You operate with increased autonomy, broader permit authority, and deeper technical competency than EHS Specialist I. You conduct inspections and focused audits, lead investigations for moderate incidents using established root cause methods, author Job Hazard Analyses and Operational Risk Assessments for routine and medium-risk tasks, and drive corrective actions to closure. You support training delivery for assigned modules, maintain accurate records and dashboards, coordinate environmental basics, and mentor EHS Specialist I team members.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Implement EHS programs and corrective actions as directed by the VP of Autonomous Services (Corporate EHS Manager); recommend updates based on field findings and regulatory changes.
  • Conduct workplace inspections, task-level risk assessments (JHA/ORA), and focused internal audits; develop hazard mitigation plans and track abatement to closure.
  • Lead investigations of minor and moderate incidents and near-misses; perform root cause analysis (e.g., 5-Why) and propose corrective and preventive actions for approval by VP of Autonomous Services (EHS Specialist III and/or the Corporate EHS Manager).
  • Validate effectiveness of corrective actions; recommend updates to procedures and SOPs accordingly.
  • Maintain EHS recordkeeping, trend analysis, and compliance documentation; prepare reports and dashboards for management review.
  • Deliver assigned onboarding and toolbox topics and EHS modules within competency (e.g., HAZCOM awareness, basic Lockout/Tagout concepts, machine guarding fundamentals); coordinate drills as assigned.
  • Support environmental compliance basics: oversee universal waste handling, perform satellite accumulation area checks, and compile data for environmental reporting.
  • Participate in safety committees and meetings; present findings, own action items, and track corrective actions to verified closure.
  • Mentor EHS Specialist I team members; review their reports and provide coaching on hazard recognition and investigation methods.
  • Coordinate permits and authorizations within scope (e.g., prepare and issue hot work permits, prepare Lockout/Tagout paperwork and verify isolation under guidance).
  • Lead construction site safety inspections; conduct JHAs for construction activities including civil, mechanical, and electrical work; identify fall hazards, struck-by risks, excavation hazards, and electrical exposures, and develop mitigation plans.
  • Manage the construction permit-to-work system; issue and close out excavation permits, confined space entry permits, and elevated work authorizations; verify controls are in place before work begins.
  • Lead incident investigations for construction-related events; apply root cause methods to identify systemic causes; coordinate with subcontractors and site supervisors to implement corrective actions and verify closure.

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE, JOB SKILLS

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related field.
  • 2–4 years of EHS experience in industrial or high-hazard environments.
  • Solid working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and industry standards.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 and EHS management systems.
  • OSHA 30 certification (or willing to be trained).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to constantly traverse throughout an industrial or shop environment to access equipment and work areas.
  • Ability to frequently bend, kneel, squat, reach, and ascend/descend to service equipment.
  • Ability to effectively operate and manipulate hand tools, power tools, and precision instruments.
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position at a computer workstation for portions of the workday.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and exchange information in person, via phone, and through other electronic means.
