Job Description

Postdoctoral Research Associate
Location: Princeton, NJ

Salary Range or Pay Grade: $65,000 - $70,000 a year
Description

The Ferris Research Group in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at Princeton University invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate position, to start as early as May 2026. The Ferris group studies high-temperature reaction chemistry and particulate formation using optical diagnostic methods, with applications to alternative fuel design and atmospheric chemistry. The successful candidate will be expected to assist with the construction of multiple optical systems to comprehensively characterize fuel droplet size and morphology of soot particles generated through the combustion of new, synthetic aviation fuel candidates. The goal of this work is to provide new insight into the mechanism of soot particulate formation and the cloud microphysical processes underpinning ice crystal/contrail formation.

Qualifications

Qualifications for the position include:

  • Expertise in scattering-based laser diagnostics
  • Expertise in high-speed imaging and optical system design
  • Experience with high-power, Class IV laser systems
  • Experience with multi-phase reacting systems
  • Strong background in mechanical, electrical, and data acquisition systems (e.g., vacuum systems, high-pressure gas handling, analog signals/switching, high-speed data acquisition)
  • Strong publication record
  • Spectroscopic modeling experience preferred (HITRAN/HITEMP)

In addition to technical expertise, we value strong communication, technical writing skills, and teamwork. The successful candidate is a self-starter with a demonstrated ability to independently lead research projects. Candidates must also be comfortable working with and mentoring graduate and undergraduate student researchers.

Application Instructions

To be eligible for this position, a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field is required.

All appointments will be for one year with possible renewal based on performance and available funding. This is a full-time position; work must be conducted on-site at Princeton.

Applicants must apply online and submit a CV (including a list of publications), a cover letter (summarizing past research experience and how it matches the qualifications listed above, current research interests, and future career goals), and contact information for three references. The candidate is subject to the University’s background check policy.

Inquiries about the position may be sent to amferris@princeton.edu with the subject line “Ferris Lab Postdoc Inquiry 2026”. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, with a final deadline of March 31, 2026.
