Job Description

About This Role

This is a production-support role, not a stockroom job. At ACME, Tool Crib Attendants are the reason machines keep running. When a machinist on the floor needs a new insert, a preset holder, or a replacement end mill at 8:30 PM, you're the person who makes it happen — fast, right, and without drama. Second shift at ACME is where a lot of the heavy production happens, and this role sits at the center of keeping it moving.

You'll work directly with machinists, setup techs, and supervisors to stage tooling ahead of jobs, respond to live production demands, maintain crisp inventory, and keep the crib organized enough that anyone can find what they need in under 60 seconds. If you have a background in manufacturing and want a role where your hustle is visible and your contribution is concrete every single day, this is it.

Position Summary

The Tool Crib Attendant is responsible for assembling, presetting, staging, and issuing cutting tools and tooling consumables in support of ACME's 2nd shift machining operations. This role ensures that tooling is accurate, labeled, available, and ready before jobs begin — and that live floor demands during production are handled quickly and correctly. The Tool Crib Attendant also maintains crib organization, tracks inventory levels, and works closely with the Tool Crib Supervisor and shop floor teams to eliminate tooling-related machine downtime.

Key Responsibilities 3:00 PM - 11:30 PM

Drive Production Readiness

  • Assemble and preset cutting tools according to job setup sheets; verify assemblies are correct, labeled, and staged before production begins
  • Coordinate with 2nd shift machinists and setup technicians to ensure critical tooling is ready ahead of each job start — don't wait for a machinist to come ask
  • Respond quickly to live tooling requests during production runs; replenish broken or worn tools without creating delays
  • Communicate proactively with the Tool Crib Supervisor and 2nd shift leadership about tooling shortages, quality issues, or pending stockouts before they become emergencies
  • Minimize machine downtime attributable to tooling — this is the primary measure of success in this role

Manage Tool Crib Operations

  • Issue and receive tooling, holders, inserts, and consumables; accurately record transactions in the tool tracking or ERP system (M2M)
  • Maintain crib layout so high-run tooling is front-accessible and every location is labeled and consistent
  • Monitor inventory levels for fast-moving consumables; escalate replenishment needs early — don't let the crib go to zero on critical items
  • Support cycle counts and physical inventory audits; reconcile discrepancies and report findings to supervisor
  • Keep the crib clean, organized, and OSHA-compliant throughout the shift

Support the Shop Floor

  • Work directly with machinists and setup teams — learn what they need before they ask, and build relationships that make production run smoother
  • Assist with basic tooling troubleshooting; escalate wear or breakage patterns that suggest a setup or programming issue to the appropriate team
  • Prioritize all work based on production schedule impact; know which jobs are hot and treat their tooling accordingly
  • Perform or support basic tool reconditioning (insert replacement, holder cleaning) as directed
  • Maintain safe work practices in all crib and floor-adjacent activities; follow ACME EHS protocols and immediately report any hazardous conditions

Qualifications

Required

  • Ability to work from 3:00 PM through 11:30 PM
  • Experience working in a manufacturing or machining environment — you understand what happens on a shop floor
  • Basic knowledge of cutting tools (inserts, end mills, drills, holders) or machining fundamentals; willingness to learn more on the job
  • Ability to read and interpret job setup sheets or tooling assembly instructions
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail — crib accuracy matters; wrong tools cause scrapped parts
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively on 2nd shift with limited supervision
  • Physical ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs; able to stand and move throughout the shift

Preferred

  • CNC tooling assembly or presetting experience (Kennametal, Sandvik, Iscar, or equivalent)
  • Experience in a contract machining, job shop, or high-mix / low-volume production environment
  • Familiarity with ERP or tool tracking systems (M2M, Toolroom Manager, or similar)
  • Experience working in an AS9100 or ISO 9001 certified facility
  • 2nd shift work history — comfortable with 3:00 PM–11:30 PM hours and the pace of late-shift production
