Pre-Construction Internship in San Antonio, Texas at Sterling Construction Company, Inc.

Texas Sterling Construction is looking for a Pre-Construction Intern to join our team in San Antonio, TX. This opportunity is ideal for a Junior or Senior pursuing a degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or a related field who is interested in learning more about heavy civil construction and building a career in estimating and pre-construction.

This is not an internship where you'll spend your time watching from the sidelines. You'll work alongside our estimating and pre-construction team and gain hands-on experience with the work that goes into building a project before construction ever begins.

What You'll Learn & Do

1. Assist the estimating team with quantity takeoffs and bid preparation
2. Learn how to read and interpret construction plans, drawings, and specifications
3. Assist with reviewing bid documents and project requirements
4. Help gather and organize subcontractor and supplier pricing
5. Support estimators with cost information and bid documentation
6. Gain exposure to CAD, BIM, and estimating software used by our team
7. Assist with preparing drawings, layouts, reports, and other supporting materials
8. Participate in pre-bid meetings and project discussions when appropriate
9. Learn how estimators evaluate project scope, quantities, costs, and potential risks
10. Work with experienced construction professionals and gain exposure to the full pre-construction process

What We're Looking For

1. Currently a Junior or Senior pursuing a degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or a related field
2. Interest in heavy civil construction, estimating, or pre-construction
3. Basic understanding of construction plans and terminology is helpful but not required
4. Exposure to AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, Excel, estimating software, or similar programs is a plus — we don't expect you to know everything coming in
5. Comfortable working with numbers and learning quantity takeoffs
6. Detail-oriented and organized
7. Strong communication skills
8. Dependable with a strong work ethic
9. Eager to ask questions, learn, and take on increasing responsibility
