The Scenic Technician and Fiberglass Specialist creates custom scenic elements for trade shows, themed environments and live events. This role performs the full range of scenic shop work, including fabrication, sculpting, surface preparation, texturing, finishing, repairs and assembly. The employee also brings proven fiberglass spray-up and lay-up experience and performs spraying with controls that protect everyone in nearby work areas.

Essential Responsibilities

Interpret drawings, sketches and project specifications; fabricate and assemble scenic structures, props, dimensional features and themed elements with the Scenic team.

Cut, carve, shape and bodywork foam and other scenic substrates; use adhesives, fillers and epoxy sculpting compounds to build forms, repair defects and create textures.

Prepare and apply approved scenic surface systems, including plaster or concrete textures, sealers, hardcoats, primers and paint, as trained and assigned; check material compatibility and cure before the next step.

Fabricate or repair scenic props and artificial tree components, including bark texture, branches and removable assemblies, when called for by the project.

Build and prepare molds, forms and substrates; measure and mix materials according to approved instructions and safety data sheets.

Apply resin, gelcoat and fiberglass by spray-up, hand lay-up or other assigned methods; control thickness, coverage and cure to meet project specifications.

Operate and clean spray equipment, tools and material handling equipment for which trained and authorized; inspect hoses, ventilation and other controls before use.

Trim, grind, sand, patch, texture and finish scenic pieces; inspect dimensions, contours, adhesion, cure and appearance, then correct defects before handoff.

Set up and secure workpieces, use approved hand and power tools, maintain dust controls, and assist with shop assembly, packing and onsite installation when assigned.

Coordinate with carpentry, paint and project leads on drawings, materials, deadlines, handoffs and safe movement of parts.

Maintain a clean work area; store, label and dispose of chemicals, contaminated materials and waste according to ID3 procedures.

Safety and Work Area Controls

Perform fiberglass and resin spraying only in an approved, properly operating spray booth, hardcoat room or other location specifically assessed and authorized for the material and process. Do not spray in an open shared shop area.

Before spraying, confirm ventilation and containment, restrict access, and coordinate with the manager so coworkers nearby are not exposed to fumes, mist or overspray. Stop work and notify the manager if controls are unavailable or ineffective.

Use assigned protective clothing, gloves and eye or face protection. When a respirator is required, use it only after medical evaluation, fit testing when required, and training under ID3’s respiratory protection program.

Follow chemical labels, safety data sheets, fire prevention rules, equipment procedures and applicable OSHA requirements. Report exposures, near misses, equipment problems and injuries immediately.

Qualifications

Demonstrated hands-on scenic technician experience building dimensional elements, shaping foam, sculpting, using adhesives and fillers, preparing surfaces, texturing and finishing. Experience limited to fiberglass spraying alone does not meet the scope of this position.

Demonstrated fiberglass fabrication skills, including composite spray-up, resin or gelcoat application, mold preparation, lay-up and repair.

Ability to read work orders and drawings, measure and mix materials accurately, solve fabrication and finish problems, and maintain quality under project deadlines.

Ability to complete required safety training and use required protective equipment and respiratory protection in accordance with applicable program requirements.

Clear communication and willingness to coordinate with other trades and stop work when spray-area controls are inadequate.

Physical and Work Environment

Work occurs in a fabrication shop with standing, bending, reaching and repetitive hand work; may involve dust, noise and chemical vapors while appropriate controls and protection are used.

Lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently when safe; obtain a second person or appropriate assistance above 50 pounds and mechanical assistance above 100 pounds, consistent with ID3 procedures.
