Job Description

Primary Purpose

The Director of Safety & Risk Management is responsible for developing, implementing, and leading the Company's safety, risk management, loss prevention, insurance, claims, and regulatory compliance programs. This position provides strategic leadership to protect employees, assets, operations, and the Company's financial interests while fostering a culture of safety and accountability. The Director serves as the primary leader for occupational safety, workers' compensation, insurance programs, claims management, enterprise risk assessment, and business continuity planning. The role partners closely with operations, HR, finance, and executive leadership to reduce incidents, minimize risk exposure, and support organizational objectives.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Safety Leadership

  • Develop and execute the Company's safety strategy and annual safety objectives.
  • Lead all occupational health and safety programs.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, EPA, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee incident investigations and root cause analyses.
  • Establish corrective action plans and ensure implementation.
  • Monitor and report safety performance metrics.
  • Lead safety training, employee engagement, and safety culture initiatives.
  • Conduct facility audits and field inspections.

Risk Management

  • Develop and maintain the Company's enterprise risk management framework.
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate operational, financial, strategic, and regulatory risks.
  • Lead risk assessments across all business units.
  • Advise executive leadership on emerging risks and mitigation strategies.
  • Develop and maintain risk registers and reporting dashboards.

Insurance & Claims Management

  • Manage all property, casualty, auto liability, general liability, and workers' compensation insurance programs.
  • Coordinate annual insurance renewals and maintain relationships with insurance brokers, carriers, adjusters, and other third-party partners.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact with the Company's insurance broker regarding coverage questions, claims, risk exposures, and other insurance-related issues or concerns.
  • Analyze coverage needs and recommend program improvements.
  • Oversee claims administration and claim resolution activities.
  • Coordinate auto liability claims, including scheduling vehicle appraisals and repairs and monitoring completion of repairs.
  • Coordinate with insurance adjusters and third parties involved in auto incidents regarding property damage, vehicle repairs, bodily injury claims, and claim resolution.
  • Monitor claims trends and implement loss-reduction strategies.
  • Partner with legal counsel, insurance carriers, brokers, and other stakeholders regarding significant claims and litigation.

Workers' Compensation Management

  • Direct workers' compensation claims oversight and return-to-work programs.
  • Collaborate with HR and operational leaders on injury management.
  • Monitor claim costs and trends.
  • Develop initiatives to reduce claim frequency and severity.

Insurance, Contract & Audit Administration

  • Collaborate with Legal, HR, insurance brokers, and other appropriate stakeholders in the review of insurance and risk-related provisions for new and revised project contracts and temporary staffing agreements.
  • Support annual financial audits by partnering with the Finance team to provide and discuss insurance limits, claim payments, outstanding reserves, and related insurance and risk information.
  • Coordinate with Finance and other internal departments to gather and provide documentation required for annual workers' compensation, general liability, and automobile insurance audits.
  • Compile and validate audit documentation, including annual and quarterly payroll reports by division, applicable tax reporting forms, loss runs, and other requested financial and insurance records.
  • Track and report OCIP/CCIP payroll by project and month and provide supporting documentation as required for insurance and project-specific audits.
  • Maintain and provide subcontractor listings, Certificates of Insurance (COIs), and related documentation required for insurance audits and risk management purposes.
  • Coordinate with insurance brokers, carriers, auditors, Finance, HR, Legal, and Operations to address audit questions, discrepancies, and requests for additional documentation.

Compliance & Regulatory Affairs

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations.
  • Oversee regulatory inspections and audits.
  • Maintain required permits, documentation, and compliance records.
  • Monitor changes in regulatory requirements and implement necessary updates.

Emergency Preparedness & Business Continuity

  • Lead emergency response planning and crisis management preparedness.
  • Develop and maintain business continuity and disaster recovery plans.
  • Coordinate emergency drills and response exercises.

Leadership & Management

  • Lead and develop a high-performing safety and risk management team.
  • Establish departmental goals and performance metrics.
  • Prepare and manage departmental budgets.
  • Present risk and safety performance updates to the executive leadership team.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement and accountability.


Minimal Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Risk Management, Business Administration, Industrial Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety, or a related field.

Certification / License

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Associate in risk management (ARM)
  • Certified Risk Manager (CRM)
  • Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST)
  • Certified Director of Safety (CDS)

Work Experience

  • 8+ years of progressive safety, risk management, insurance, or compliance experience.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience.
  • Experience managing insurance programs, claims, and workers' compensation.
  • Experience in commercial construction or industrial construction.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Strong understanding of construction contracts, contractual risk transfer, insurance requirements, certificates of insurance, and OCIP/CCIP programs.
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently to multiple project sites and company locations nationwide to support safety, risk management, compliance, and operational needs.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and construction safety standards.
  • Ability to perform risk assessments and hazard analyses.
  • Strong investigation and root-cause analysis skills.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and training abilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and safety reporting software.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with field and executive teams.
  • Strong organizational and decision-making skills.
  • Experience with Procore safety and reporting tools


Preferred Job Requirements

Certification / License

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST)
  • Associate in risk management (ARM)
  • Occupational Health and Safety Technician (OHST)
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification

Work Experience

  • 2+ Years Commercial Construction (Safety Professional Role)
  • 5+ Years General Construction (Safety Professional Role).

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • 10+ years of progressive safety, risk management, insurance, or compliance experience
  • 7+ years of leadership experience.
  • Experience in data center construction.


Compensation

  • Constructiv is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The annual salary for this role is $130,000.00 - $195,000.00. This compensation will ultimately be in line with the location in which the position is filled. Final compensation for this role will be determined by various factors such as a candidate’s relevant work experience, skills, certifications, and geographic location. This role is eligible for variable compensation including short term and long-term incentives.


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear; and use hands to manipulate objects or controls. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. On occasion, the incumbent may be required to stoop, bend, or reach above the shoulders. The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Specific conditions of this job are typical of frequent and continuous computer-based work requiring periods of sitting, close vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Up to 50% travel and valid Driver’s License required.
