Position Summary:

The Music Therapist provides compassionate, individualized music therapy services to hospice patients and their families to support physical comfort, emotional well-being, spiritual needs, and quality of life. This role collaborates closely with the interdisciplinary team to integrate music therapy into the patient’s plan of care.

Requirements:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assess patients’ physical, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual needs and develop individualized music therapy treatment plans.
  • Provide direct music therapy interventions in patients’ homes, nursing facilities, or inpatient units.
  • Use live and recorded music, singing, instrument play, and songwriting to promote relaxation, pain and symptom management, reminiscence, life review, and emotional expression.
  • Support families and caregivers through therapeutic music experiences that encourage coping, comfort, and connection.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, providing input on patient progress and treatment goals.
  • Document assessments, interventions, and outcomes in the electronic medical record in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Provide bereavement support as appropriate, including participation in memorial services or grief support groups.
  • Educate staff, volunteers, and community partners about the benefits of music therapy in hospice care.
  • Maintain professional boundaries, ethical standards, and confidentiality at all times.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in music therapy from an AMTA-approved program.
  • Certification as a Music Therapist (MT-BC) required.
  • Current CPR certification
  • Current driver’s license, reliable transportation, and proof of auto insurance.
  • Previous hospice, palliative care, or healthcare experience preferred.
  • Strong musical skills (voice and instrument proficiency) and ability to adapt music to diverse patient needs.

Work Environment

  • Frequent travel to patient homes, facilities, and hospice offices.
  • May require sitting, standing, lifting light instruments, and occasional bending.
  • Exposure to varying patient care environments.

Physical Demands

Must be in good physical condition to meet the demands of an active position including extensive walking, driving, sitting, and standing.
