Lead Physical Substation Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Lead Physical Substation Engineer based in United States.

This role offers an opportunity for an experienced electrical engineer to lead the design and execution of complex substation projects.
You will provide technical leadership across medium and high-voltage power delivery initiatives while collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
The position requires strong expertise in physical substation design, project delivery, and engineering standards.
You will contribute to reliable and innovative energy infrastructure solutions supporting utilities, renewable energy, telecommunications, and industrial clients.
As a key technical contributor, you will guide project execution, ensure quality deliverables, and mentor engineering teams.
This remote position provides the flexibility to work from anywhere in the United States while making a meaningful impact on the evolving energy landscape.

Accountabilities:

The Lead Physical Substation Engineer will oversee the technical delivery of substation engineering projects, ensuring high-quality designs, accurate documentation, and successful execution. This role requires strong project leadership, engineering expertise, and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Lead engineering activities for new and ongoing medium and high-voltage substation projects, supporting multiple initiatives simultaneously.
  • Develop conceptual designs, execution plans, project cost estimates, and schedules to support successful project delivery.
  • Prepare construction drawings, technical documents, engineering calculations, studies, and reports aligned with client and industry standards.
  • Perform quality reviews of engineering designs and deliverables created by engineers and designers.
  • Apply engineering principles and design methodologies to develop reliable power delivery solutions.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including civil, structural, protection and controls, and transmission line engineers.
  • Ensure technical accuracy and compliance with applicable engineering standards, including IEEE, IEC, NESC, and client requirements.
  • Provide technical guidance, problem-solving support, and engineering leadership throughout project lifecycles.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and contribute to maintaining high standards of engineering excellence.
Requirements:

The ideal candidate is an experienced electrical engineer with extensive knowledge of physical substation design and the ability to lead complex engineering projects. Strong technical expertise, attention to detail, and communication skills are essential for success in this role.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • 8+ years of experience in physical substation engineering.
  • Extensive experience designing high-voltage substations, including systems ranging from 12kV through 500kV.
  • Strong understanding of substation physical layouts, equipment, and engineering practices.
  • Ability to interpret and apply industry standards such as IEEE, IEC, NESC, and client-specific requirements.
  • Experience preparing engineering studies, calculations, technical reports, and construction documentation.
  • Strong project coordination skills and ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication abilities.
  • Experience with relay settings, protection and controls, or related substation disciplines is a plus.
